The purpose of this study was to examine homemakers' family stress and self-esteem on their depression among homemakers in their 30~40s. To this end, the family stress, self-esteem, and depression of 178 homemakers residing in Okcheon-gun, Chungbuk were surveyed and analyzed.
As a study method, the means(M) and standard deviations (SD) of the family stress, self-esteem, and depression were obtained to examine general tendencies of the study subjects. For statistical processing, factorial analyses, independent sample t-tests, one-way analyses of variance(ANOVA), correlation analyses, and multiple regression analyses were conducted.
The family stress scale use in this study had been modified by this researcher through factorial analyses to enhance reliability and depression groups were divided into normal depression, mild depression, serious depression, and severe depression groups pursuant to the standard of the original scale for analyses.
According the results of the analyses, differences in depression were not shown among different ages, education levels, and numbers of children among sociodemographic characteristics. On the other hand, differences in depression were shown among different economic conditions, religions, and perceptions of health conditions. Differences among the groups divided according to the degree of depression were checked. According to the results, the groups showed differences from each other in economic issues and human relations among the sub factors of family stress and in self-humiliation, relationships with others, leadership and popularity, assertiveness, and anxiety among the sub factors of self-esteem.
The relationships between the groups divided according to the degree of depression and variables were analyzed. According to the results, whereas the normal group showed relationships with all sub factors except for leadership and popularity among the sub factors of self-esteem, groups with tendencies for depression showed reduced relationships with the sub factors.
As for the effects of family stress and self-esteem on depression, whereas economic issues and relationships with others explained depression in the normal group, no model was established in groups with tendencies for depression.
Consequently, only economic issues and relationships with others which is a sub factor of family stress were identified as having effects on depression. In the case of groups with tendencies for depression, economic issues acted as an external factor for depression, religions were selected for psychological stability, and health conditions were thought to be not good by the subjects in the groups.
Although the results of this study cannot be easily generalized because the subjects were homemakers in only a limited region, the results indicate that programs are necessary in order to reduce the depression of homemakers who are key persons of families.
