Norovirus is a major pathogen of acute gastroenteritis epidemics and causes significant morbidity worldwide. Antivirals and vaccines are currently not available for efficient control of norovirus replication. Influenza virus causes acute respiratory infection responsible for seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics. Influenza viruses were controlled with antivirals, but high-level resistance has rapidly developed. There is a pressing need for developing new antivirals for norovirus and influenza virus with novel mechanisms. Recently, broad-spectrum antivirals for norovirus and influenza virus have been studied, in particular, using natural food materials. Herein I identified the antiviral effects of red wine and resveratrol on foodborne viral surrogates, murine norovirus-1 (MNV-1) and feline calicivirus-F9 (FCV-F9). Complete inhibitory effect of plaque formation was obtained in the co-treatment with red wine at 1% concentration during MNV-1 infection. Resveratrol among many polyphenol compounds of red wine exhibited notable antiviral effects against MNV-1 and FCV-F9. Co-treatment of MNV-1 with resveratrol revealed remarkable antiviral effect with IC50 of 7.7 μM. In case of FCV-F9, IC50 was 49.8 μM. Both red wine and resveratrol reduced viral polymerase gene expression significantly in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggest that red wine and resveratrol can affect the foodborne viral surrogates very effectively at an early stage of infection. Antiviral activities of Rubus coreanus and Morus alba juice (RCJ and MAJ) and seed extracts (RCS and MAS) were examined using time-of-addition plaque reduction assay against influenza viruses of different subtypes, H1N1, H1N1pdm, H3N2 and type B. RCS showed the highest antiviral activity among the samples tested. Replication of the viruses during infection was almost completely abolished by co-treatment with RCS or its low molecular weight fraction RCS-F1 (less than 1 kDa) at 50 μg/mL. RCS-F1 inhibited hemagglutination at 0.05 μg/mL. RCS or RCS-F1 may interfere with either the internalization of virion into host cells or the attachment of viral surface protein to its cellular receptor. Black raspberry can be developed as a highly effective inhibitor of viral replication, providing an attractive candidate for antiviral agent.
