The present study has the following purposes. First, this study investigates the effects of phonological awareness instruction combined with phonetics (PAICWP) on Korean middle school students’ English proficiency. Second, the current study is designed to find any differences between two different teaching methods (modes) of instruction using PAICWP in terms of Focus on Form (FonF): explicit instruction and implicit instruction. Third, the current study aims to find out if any effects from the instruction of PAICWP persist after 4 weeks of instruction. For this research, participants were divided into three groups: one control group (CG) and two experimental groups (EG). No treatments were given for the CG and one EG was an implicit instruction group (IIG) and the other EG was an explicit instruction group (EIG). The IIG received implicit instruction and feedback using implicit Focus on Form Instruction which has more implicit aspects of FonF such as input flood, input enhancement, recast, etc. In contrast, the EIG was taught using explicit instruction and feedback using explicit Focus on Form Instruction which has more explicit facets of FonF such as dictogloss, consciousness-raising task, garden path, etc. during the sessions and when students made mistakes. The English proficiency level of participants was beginner learner according to the scores of the nationwide diagnosis test and city-wide English proficiency test. Most of the students in the current study were classified low-achieving students (LAS) or Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students. The age of the subjects ranged between 14 and 15. Data was collected and analyzed using the pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-test. According to the results, there were no significant differences between listening, speaking, and reading ability on the three pre-tests between the three groups. However, there were notable differences between CG without PAICWP and the EIG with PAICWP in three immediate post-tests: listening, speaking, and reading. There was a statistically significant difference between CG, IIG and EIG in two different delayed post-tests of listening and reading. However, there was no statistically significant difference between CG, IIG and EIG in the delayed post-test of speaking. Furthermore, questionnaires for students, Korean English teachers (KET), native English speaking teachers (NEST), were distributed to find their current beliefs about the present study-related items: amount of study time, pronunciation teaching, feedback, etc. This study implies that PAICWP is helpful and informative for the improvement of listening, speaking and reading ability in Korean middle school LASs. In addition, the study found that explicit instruction is more effective than implicit instruction when it comes to Focus on Form for Korean middle school students.
