The current study focuses on efficiency of smart devices and their contents in educational context. Even though significant attention has been given to smart education, the smart education strategy plan drafted by the government is about the only relevant guideline established so far. Without the systematized plan before placing in schools, garnering the potential benefits embedded in smart education will be highly difficult. From this perspective, it is essential to accurately understand the current status of smart education through surveying on smart device and its content usage and to suggest the suitable solutions to any noticeable problems. Based on the survey result presented in this study, the tablet PC was most frequently utilized by students and teachers to fulfill their needs; both groups employed the device while learning a language or acquiring knowledge about the specific field of their interests. Similar result was found from teachers although they also probe on more general liberal arts using the tablet PC. However, both teachers and students pointed out preference for conventional textbooks over the smart device; they argued that not only it is inconvenient but also, the user has to be self-compulsory to consistently make use of the device. In addition, it was proposed by many that the exam-oriented curriculum in Korea also limits the role of the smart device in education. From the technical perspective, the device itself is central to discussion. The software platform, recovery and maintenance system have been favourably commented while the hardware specifications have not met the needs of users especially the memory storage. Also, a software that aids the students in avoiding entertainment contents and a standard tablet PC model that can be distributed nationwide like standard textbooks by the government are in urgent need. Teachers and students acknowledged that smart device will allow self-directed learning as well as repeated exercise; it is expected that the application of smart device in educational context be broadened. The anticipated educational contents included bidirectional interaction between the trainer and the trainee as well as education applications using games. Furthermore, 3D-based contents and exam applications were chosen as the additional functions that may be added in the future smart device. Specifically, to promote motivation and to obtain educational benefits, 3D-based contents need to be designed in a systematic approach.
