The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of support from medical social workers on the caregiving burden of families with stroke patients, the mediating effects of patient-related variables and the moderating effects of social support from medical social workers on stroke patients and their families in an effort to offer some authentic information on the right directions for intervention by medical social workers and program development. The geographic scope of this study was confined to the city of Daejeon, and the subjects in this study were 211 providers who had stroke patients hospitalized in rehabilitation hospitals, general hospitals and geriatric hospitals in Daejeon. A survey was conducted to determine the impact of support from medical social workers on their caregiving burden. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the families who had male patients were under heavier caregiving pressure, and the families felt more burden when the patients were older, when they had their spouses, when they were less educated, when their spouses looked after them and when they suffered from the disease for five years or more. In other words, the spouses whose husbands were older stroke patients faced more difficulties because they had to provide for and look after them at the same time. A longer duration of the disease led to heavier time-dependence burden and more financial caregiving burden. Second, the families for whom the women provided were under heavier caregiving pressure, and the caregiving burden of the families became more serious when the providers were in their 50s, when they were married, when they were less educated, when they believed in Buddhism, when they were homemakers, when they were daughters-in-law, when they spent six hours or more a day looking after the patients, when they continued to look after them for five years or more, when they were in bad health, and when their monthly mean family income was smaller. Third, as a result of analyzing how much support the families with stroke patients received from medical social workers, they gave a mean of 3.65 out of five, which showed that the providers received a lot of support from medical social workers. Among different types of support from medical social workers, informative support was most prevalent (3.75), followed by emotional support(3.62) and evaluative support(3.59). Material support was smallest(3.57). In conclusion, social support from medical social workers was shown to exert a significant influence on the caregiving burden of the providers of the stroke patients. The four kinds of social support provided by medical social workers, which were emotional support, informative support, material support and evaluative support, had a significant even impact on the six kinds of provider burden, which were time-dependence burden, developmental burden, physical burden, social burden, emotional burden and financial burden. And their social support served to relieve the providers of caregiving burden.
