As problems of smartphone overuse is recently becoming a serious societal issue, this study investigated the effects of mothers’ smartphone addiction and parenting efficacy on children’s smartphone addiction and mental health. For this, this study first examines the current smartphone usage trends among children, and then proceeded to explore relative influences of mothers’ smartphone addiction and parenting efficacy on children’s smartphone addiction and mental health. Correlations between children’s smartphone addiction and mental health variables were also examined. Surveys were conducted in preschools, kindergartens, and churches located in Seoul and Gyeonggi and data from 450 children of ages between 3 and 5 were collected as a result. Collected data were statistically analyzed for frequencies, Cronbach’s ɑ, hierarchical regression, bivariate correlation using PASW Statistics 18.0 software. Major results of the study can be summarized as follow. First, most children were exposed to a smartphone through their mother, followed by father, a relative, a sibling, and then a friend. Also, children tended to use a smartphone with mother most often, followed by a sibling, father, a friend, and then a relative. Children most frequently reported that they have been using a smartphone for a duration of more than three months but less than a year. They typically played on their smartphones about 1∼2 days per week, but about 26.5% of them said that they use a smartphone every day. In fact, 96.1% of all children participants appeared to use smartphones at least one day per week. The average time spent on smartphone at a time turned out to be ‘between 10 minutes and 30 minutes’ for most children, and relatively few children used it more than 60 minutes. However, the average time spent one smartphone at one sitting appeared to be increasing. Children most frequently used smartphones on special occasions such as family dinner outing or using public transportations. The child and mother usually decided together whether the child can play on the smartphone. Second, the impact of mothers’ smartphone addiction and parenting efficacy differed among the subfactors of children’s smartphone addiction. Specifically, the levels of children’s Disturbance of Adaptive Functions and Withdrawal were higher when mothers’ Virtual Life Orientation and Withdrawal were higher and when mothers’ levels of Instrumental Care and Discipline were lower. Children’s levels of Virtual Life Orientation tended to increase as mothers’ levels of Withdrawal increased and as Discipline decreased. Children’s levels of Tolerance appeared to increase as mothers’ levels of Tolerance increased, and as mothers’ Instrumental Care and Discipline decreased and Teaching increased. Third, the impact of mothers’ smartphone addiction and parenting efficacy differed among the subfactors of children’s mental health. Specifically, children’s levels of Parent-child Relationship appeared to be higher when mothers’ levels of Tolerance were lower and when mothers’ Nurturance and Play levels were higher. Children’s levels of Autism Spectrum Disorder tended to be higher when mothers’ levels of Disturbance of Adaptive Functions were higher, and when mothers’ Instrumental Care and Discipline levels were lower. Children’s levels of Aggressiveness were found to be higher when mothers’ levels of Disturbance of Adaptive Functions were higher and when Instrumental Care and Discipline levels were lower. Children’s levels of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder seemed to increase as mothers’ levels of Withdrawal increased and as levels of Discipline and Teaching decreased. Fourth, correlation analyses revealed that all subfactors of children’s smartphone addiction (Disturbance of Adaptive Functions, Virtual Life Orientation, Tolerance, Withdrawal) were negatively correlated with children’s Parent-Child Relationship, and positively correlated with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Aggressiveness, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The significance of this study stems from the fact that it revealed the current trends of smartphone usage among children aged 3 to 5, and found that mothers’ smartphone addiction and parental efficacy have an effect on children’s smartphone addiction and mental health. In addition, the relationship between children’s smartphone addiction and mental health was clarified in this study. These results can be useful when developing preventative programs for children’s problematic behaviors related to smartphone addiction and mental health.
