Due to heavy loads of energy consumption by humans, the Earth is facing depletion in energy resources and environmental crisis such as climate change. These slowly occurring events, yet powerful effects that will have on our earth has affected nations globally, to participate in sustainable development specifically to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emission. Korea is an energy guzzling country that depends mostly on imported energy resources. Furthermore, Korea is ranked within top 10 nations that produce most carbon emission globally, hence, the country has created and applied national road map to different sectors, in turn, will reduce its BAU by 30% until 2020. Improving building energy efficiency within the industrial sector will minimize the burden nationally in earning profit and economic development. Additionally, the improvement in building energy efficiency will also bring positive outcome in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission, improving corporate sustainability, reduction in primary cost, and improvement in building life-span and environment. With all of the benefits aside, there is a lack of research regarding building energy efficiency plans that are based on determining the strategies in providing solutions for variety of characteristics of different manufacturing facilities. In this research, the main purpose is to understand about energy consumption at a higher level through energy usage analysis of 13 manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, through building energy performance evaluation, energy saving strategies will be proposed. The target buildings are composed of 13 manufacturing facilities that supply and deliver its products to a large scaled supermarket. Each manufacturing facility's energy consumption patterns are collected and determined through site analysis and building envelope's airtightness and insulating factors. Manufacturing facilities' energy performance evaluation is performed by minimizing the factors caused by human factors. This allows the comparison evaluation to be easily performed among different facilities. Lastly, in order to analyze the building energy performance, Passive House Planning Package developed by German Passivhaus Institute (effective for ISO 13790) is used by following the monthly calculation method. A standard regarding facility type has been made and set by analyzing the effects that facility environment has on energy management strategy. Heating and cooling energy demand, annual energy demand is analyzed through energy performance evaluation. From this, various energy saving strategies have been proposed regarding facilities requiring hygenic standard and intense labor for producing non-edible products. Moreoever, strategies regarding facilities requiring heating and refrigerating, general facilities necessitating dry heating, and facilities producing intense heat due to dry heating for manufacturing edible products.
