ABSTRACT A Meaning of Lifelong Learning on the Experiences of the Camino de Santiago IM, KYUNG-MI Department of Lifelong Education Graduate School of Soongsil University The purpose of this study was to explore (1) the meaning of the Camino de Santiago through four types of the existential experiences including time, space, relationship and body, and (2) find their meanings in terms of lifelong learning. For this study, the researcher used the hermeneutic phenomenological method. The researcher collected data by in-depth interviews with 8 participants who had been to the Camino de Santiago and other related data. The research was started from recording their experiences on the Camino de Santiago by asking them unstructured questions with the deep observations while walking about 300km which included Samnamgil and Seokmodogil with the participants for 11 days in March, 2013. The researcher began in-depth interviews with the participants in June and July to collect the data followed by the additional interviews in August and September to complement the previous data. Based on the data, the aspects of the participants’ experiences on the Camino de Santiago were analyzed into four types of existential experiences, time, space, relationship and body, and interpreted in terms of lifelong learning. The results deduced from the research are as in the followings. The results are as in the following: First, the lived experience of time on the Camino de Santiago can be summarized in the “slowness and leisure.” The disposition of time on the Camino de Santiago can be categorized into ‘time-machinery’, ‘time of conflict’, ‘time of flow’ and the ‘finitude and infinity of time.’ The participants had to reorganize time on their pilgrimage. At first, they focused on walking fast rather than on walking itself, so they felt the physical pain. The pain made them think about the time they were sharing with others while walking. Through this experience, they realized that ‘the physical pain dominate the thought’ and learned the value of the ‘leisure of slowness.’ They also realized that the world co-exists between the relationship with others through the time they walked together. The meaning of lifelong learning derived from their temporal experiences not only made them to realize the importance of the slowness and leisure but also brought them the ability to control their subjective time in their daily life, workspaces and studying. Second, the ‘lived experience of space’ is summarized in the ‘meditation and spirits.’ The spatiality of experiences are organized into the ‘open space’, ‘space of fear and terror’, ‘space of romance’, and ‘space of meditation and spirits.’ People can experience the meditation and spirits when they are put into extreme situations. When people walk in the darkness, exhausted and worrying about getting lost, their fearful minds help them to concentrate on the situation. Their spiritual experiences changed their life and were connected to transformative learning. Their life changed into the life of ‘emptiness, sharing and volunteering, consideration and cooperation, love, tears, simpleness, tolerance, slowness and leisure, getting out of temptation, oneness of their body and mind with the nature, and mental and physical healing.’ Third, the ‘lived experience of body’ the participants experienced can be summarized in that ‘the meaning of the physical pain is a kind of dance of penance towards the truth.’ The pain of waking lead them to infinity, and their footsteps become dance. Their lived experience of body were categorized into the ‘physical pain’, ‘fundamental and basic questions’, ‘embodied body’ and ‘tears.’ The realization of the physical pain was shown through tears they shedded for various emotions. The tears came from their inside. Moreover, the fundamental questions caused by the pain of walking, such as “Why am I walking?", “Where am I come from?” or “Who am I?”, led the participants to contact to their origin of life. The meaning of lifelong learning of their physical experience was to be the moment of spirit-wakening and reflection through the process they sublimated their pain into tolerance. Fourth, the ‘lived experience of relationship’ the participants experienced can be summarized in a “companion.” The relationships are categorized into ‘relationship to stay away’, ‘intimate relationship’, ‘independence’ and ‘relationship which is not over.’ No one can live alone, but has to build a relationship with others. For the participants, the Camino de Santiago was the pilgrimage of ‘I-You-Us’ where they had to accompany with others. Moreover, the continued relationship after the pilgrimage became something that helped them to live as well as a filed of learning where they would interchange their experiences and information. From the view on a meaning of lifelong learning of the pilgrimage, the companion with others is a process from which people learn how to care about others and cooperate with them through the interaction. The experience of companion makes people realize the homogeneity with others and learn to be me. Therefore, the pilgrimage was a filed of learning that changed the participants and led them to their new life. The participants’ learning experiences self-generate the changed life alone or through the interaction with others on the pilgrimage. It means that the participants establish their own world by the interaction, affecting one another’s experiences. They are now living their second life with consideration, modesty and volunteering with gratitude after the pilgrimage was finished. There pilgrimage is not just an end, but another beginning.
