This study was intended to identify current status of records in regard of royal court food in the Joseon Dynasty as the 38th important intangible cultural asset produced through 'the business of recording the important intangible assets' ultimately suggesting a measure of establishing the Korean food archives based on application plans. Business outcomes recorded by the Office of Cultural Properties (currently Cultural Heritage Administration) in 1965 were selected as study subjects. Hereupon, the study was proceeded based on records produced up to the end of business in 2011 after the business was transferred by the Office of Cultural Properties in 1995. Hereupon, historical backgrounds and purposes and legal grounds for recording important intangible cultural assets were identified analyzing the current status and condition of records as of the present point. In addition, the meaning and scope of 'records' emphasized with importance as time passed by were examined to deal with limitations of records by utilizing the methods of manufacturing records for royal court food in Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, cases of utilizing the records for intangible cultural assets in other fields were researched and analyzed to expand the scope of study and discussion in the use of records for royal court food in Joseon Dynasty and also to seek for a direction of development to be achieved in the future. The role of paradigm of traditional cultures is being clarified and materialized as seen in the re-creation and active utilization of values for records of intangible cultural assets and provision of public service. Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and Korea Culture & Content Agency are currently making traditional cultural elements as digital contents through 'culture-contents.com' providing them as a source of creation. Cultural Heritage Administration is operating 'storage center of Cultural Heritage Administration' in order to systematically preserve and manage and also actively utilize sources of records for cultural assets. In addition, 'National Intangible Cultural Assets Pavilion' is scheduled to be opened in the city of Jeonju in next May serving as a complex culture space for preserving, passing down, and utilizing intangible cultural assets. Hereupon, many of the public organizations dealing with records for intangible cultural assets are exerting an effort to provide more active and expanded scope of role and concept of the public service. An effort has steadily been exerted to preserve and hand down the Korean traditional food as an intangible cultural asset representing how superior it is to all over the world. 'Kimchi and Gimjang culture' as recently registered in UNESCO as a cultural heritage of humanity. In addition, Jeonju was selected as the fourth city of 'food creation' designated by UNESCO in May, 2012, next to Popayan in Columbia (2005), Cheongdo in China (2010), and Ostersund in Sweden (2010). However, it has been 50 years since the Cultural Properties Protection Law was enacted in 1962, and Royal Ancestral Rites Music was designated as the 1st important intangible cultural asset in 1964. In addition, the only types of food among all the 117 kinds that were designated as important intangible cultural assets are currently 'royal court food in Joseon Dynasty' and 'Korean traditional liquor.' In spite of how Korean food is currently recognized to be diverse and superior in the world, it still represents significantly low score when compared with other types of cultural assets. Hereupon, a method of utilizing records for royal court food in Joseon Dynasty that represents the Korean traditional food among all types of intangible cultural assets was specifically focused in this study. Seeing as how valuable and potentially useful records are in the future, no particular plan of utilization has been established as of now compared to other types of intangible cultural assets. Therefore, this study was proceeded in a perspective of expanding the scope of application and value of characteristics of 'food' not as a limitation but as a new feasibility. In addition, cases of using records for intangible cultural assets in diverse fields were researched and analyzed to re-examine the value of records and food and to seek for active plans for utilization. Furthermore, this study has suggested the necessity of establishing Korean food archives through plans of utilizing various records including the manufacture of diverse contents in consideration of users, expansion of the scope of collecting records via cooperation with related organizations, and online display in the use of archive data.
