This study set out to analyze causal, influential relations between successful aging and the predicting factors related to that of the elderly in the nation including objective and subjective health, family support, family health, social support, social participation, and the selection, optimization and compensation(SOC) strategies, thus providing basic data to support the successful aging of the elderly. The study set a structural equation model based on the assumption that an SOC strategy would mediate between objective health, subjective health, family support, family health, social support, and social participation and successful aging, testing the factors of successful aging and the mediating effects of SOC strategies. Based on the successful aging model by Baltes and Baltes(1998) involving selection, optimization, and compensation, SOC strategies are comprised of such sub-strategies as random selection, loss-based selection, optimization, and compensation. The study set the following research questions: First, what kind of effect do subjective health, objective health, family support, family health, social support, and social participation have on successful aging? Second, what kind of effect do selection, optimization, and compensation strategies have on successful aging? Third, what kind effect do subjective health, objective health, family support, family health, social support, and social participation on selection, optimization, and compensation strategies? Fourth, do selection, optimization, and compensation strategies mediate between subjective health, objective health, family support, family health, social support, and social participation and successful aging? The study surveyed and analyzed 359 senior citizens aged 65 or older living in Daegu or Gyeongbuk Province and participating in (total) welfare centers for the elderly, local cultural centers, senior centers, senior clubs, and job projects at residents' centers. The findings were as follows: First, while family support, family health, social support, and social participation had direct impacts on successful aging, objective and subjective health had no such impacts on it. Second, the higher the utilization level of the SOC strategies was, the greater their successful aging was. Third, the higher their subjective health, family support, family health, and social participation were, the greater their SOC strategy utilization became. Objective health and social support had no influences on the SOC strategies. Fourth, SOC strategies had mediating effects between subjective health, family support, family health, and social participation and successful aging and no such effects between objective health and social support and successful aging. In short, subjective health affected successful aging only via SOC strategies with no direct impacts on it, whereas objective health had no direct or indirect effects on successful aging. In addition, social support had no direct influences on it without the mediating effects of SOC strategies. Based on those findings, the study made the following practice proposals to increase the level of successful aging among the elderly population in the nation: first, a variety of programs should be developed and implemented to strengthen the subjective health of the elderly; second, the family factors had greater influences on successful aging than the individual and social factors. In particular, family health, which emphasizes family interactions, had the biggest impacts on successful aging rather than family support, which is beneficial to the elderly. It is desperate to first provide programs designed to strengthen family functions for better family relationships between the elderly and their families; third, it is required to build a social support system to heighten the level of social relationships among the elderly; and finally, there should be an integrated support system to enhance the SOC strategies in order to make specific approaches based on the diversity and needs of the elderly, which are highlighted in the SOC strategies. Finally, those practice measures as the prerequisites of successful aging will be able to serve as a catalyst to the creation of elderly culture in which the elderly first make contributions and enjoy true respect. For such elderly culture, it is required to search for ways to create an elderly-friendly environment in the aspect of social integration.
