Various nanomaterials can absorb near infrared light and effectively emit heat to kill cancer cells as promising photothermal agents. However, the utilization of conjugated polymers for photothermal therapy has been limited because of difficulty in preparing dispersions in aqueous media. I prepared water-dispersed nanoparticles of poly[2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-diyl[4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl]] (PCPDTBT) by forming phase-separated thin films of PCPDTBT and a phospholipid, followed by the conventional lipid vesicle preparation process. The diameters of resulting nanoparticles were 102.9 nm in average. The photophysical and structural properties of PCPDTBT-DOPC nanoparticles were examined by UV/visible, photoluminescence spectroscopies, calculation based on the density functional theory. The water-dispersed nanoparticles of conjugated polymers were proven to be useful for biological applications by cellular uptake, imaging, photothermal therapy, and bioconjugation experiments.
