This experimental study examined the social stigma effects which are caused by news reports related to the mentally ill criminal. For validating the effects of news reports on the social stigma effects, this study explored whether news audiences’ perceptions and attitudes of mentally ill are differed depending on the way of highlighting two stigma message attributes: responsibility and peril. The experimental design was 2(responsibility frames: personal responsibility frame / societal responsibility frame) × 3(peril attributes: symptom-related peril attributes / crime-related peril attributes / control group condition) between-subjects factorial. A total of 211 undergraduates partook in the experiment. The results showed that there were significant differences in participants’ interpretation of causes, solutions, dangerousness of mentally ill’s crime which are caused by variation of responsibility frames and peril attiributes in news reports. There was a difference in participants’ perception of responsibility of mentally ill’s crime with the use of different responsibility frames. Also, the use of societal responsibility frame had an greater effect on causing participants’ pity than that of personal responsibility frame. However, there were no significant effects on the perception of dangerousness, causing anger and fear, and intention of discrimination among the experimental groups. Therefore, this study partially verified the social stigma effects which are classified into cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions.
