Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the recognition and knowledge of dental infection control of medical consumer with a visit experience in dentistry and to provide the basic data required to formulate policies and strategies of dental infection control, which is satisfied and reliable by the medical consumer. Material and Methods : Data was collected and analyzed by using a self-administered questionnaire survey method targeting 332 medical customers who were older than 20 years and have a visit experience in dentistry. The survey samples were selected to be based on the sampling method of service targeting medical customers who are living in North Jeolla Province. Results : The main consideration for selecting dental clinic was cleanliness (27.9%), which is status of sanitary and infection control. The next was many years of clinical experience (23.5%), and kindness of staff is 22.1%. The highest awareness of dental infection control was in each categories: female (42.3%), over 50 years old (67.9%), with less high school education (51.1%), and no income (52.5%). In comparison of infection control between dental clinic and general clinic, negative answers were slightly higher than positives: strongly agree (3.0%), agree (44.9%), disagree (46.7), and strongly disagree: 46.7%. Lack of awareness among patients (32.8%) was the main reason of the negative awareness. The participants considered that hand washing (70.4%) is the most important in infection control, followed by gloves (14.0%), and mask (11.3%). Staffing of infection control professional was positive, 71.3% participants agreed. Younger people and single (80.7%) agree the staffing. However, charging extra fee for infection control was negative (72.5%). Conclusions : The effort of dental medical staff and the necessity of strengthening the institutions and policies for non-stop infection control of government are expected to be required in order to improve the satisfaction of dental infection control of medical customers.
