A Study on the Space Formative Concepts of Traditional Temple viewed in the Seon Ecology원문보기

Since the environmental crisis is come to the fore, as a solution for development of environmental ethics, various fusion among academic fields is being established, and the combination between Buddhism and ecology was established under such background. The foundation of this study was consideration of the concrete space modeling of temple from this Buddhist ecological perspective. Based on the bibliographical data of Buddhist ecology, such Buddhist ecological characteristics were histrionic realm of Buddhism – ecological holism and self-regulating order of realm of Buddhism – circulatory order of ecology, egalitarian nature of Buddha – biological equality in ecology, inner value, and theory of immaterial moderation of Buddhism – implementation of great self-consciousness and personified nature of Buddhism – vitality and activity of ecology, and through the study of how these characteristics are related to traditional temples, the idea of space modeling as above was considered. This is to determine the possibility of Buddhism ecology with new method of approach for the analysis of traditional temples.
The Buddhism ecological space modeling factors extracted from theoretical consideration of Buddhism ecology are as follow.
First, the circulatory method is an idea of histrionic correlation that shares the context with totalitarianism of eco-philosophy. Hence, all existences are bonded with relativity, and everything mutually coexists. This type of space continuously changes, circulates and becomes the whole existence through organic relationship with nature, human, and structures. In detail, the circulatory methodology is categorized into ① continuous flow, ② relationship of circulation ③ experience of infinite possibility for creation; the continuous flow is an idea of space perceived by flow of structures, transition of space levels, path and trip, and steady increase, the relationship of circulation is relativity, circularity, and deflection of axis among structure, nature, and human. This is a horizontal idea between structure and human. Lastly, the experience of infinite possibility for creation is an idea of structure to derive indirect flow to experience transient factors such as chronological flow or uncertain factors, to derive the volume not to be understood at a glance, to bedim corners of structures, to expand the border of perception due to windows in isolated space, and to create expectation and tension through uncertainty due to various light and silhouette.
At second, the space of consummate balance is an idea of imbalanced, incomplete, and asymmetric space through denial of completion. This indicates the consummate mutual imbalance adjusted among extreme cases, and this forms certain order among irregular transitions. This is an idea of having self-regulating order within chaos of Buddhism and ecology, and it is categorized into ① visual vanishment ② free coexistence ③ unparalleled contrast; the visual vanishment is to arrange deflection at the entrance or vanishing arrangement of structure from the view, or the space modeling of introducing pillars that is related to removal of opponents against Buddhism. The free coexistence indicates asymmetry of arrangement and elevation and harmony of asymmetry, and the unparalleled contrast is extreme contrast. This is established by the contrast between massive scale and vacancy, introduction of light and color to overcome sense of weight from mass, and others.
Thirdly, both organic and inorganic substances are determined to have the nature of Buddha in Buddhism such that this idea complies with inner value of ecological environmental. This is an idea including equality of essence that is indicated as denial of non-excess in space. This also includes frugality, simplicity, and artlessness, and free from morphological intention, it pursues the abstain purity based on daily life and return to the essence of space. The denial of non-excess is divided into ① technique of artlessness ② revelation of daily life ③ adulterated daily life and non-daily life, and the technique of artlessness is an idea to establish the transparent agreement between subject of perception and object by introducing nothing, and it is implemented by simplicity, beauty of natural ingredient, simple color and material, removal of camouflaged factors, cleanliness of yard, etc. In Buddhism, the daily life is preferred to the format, this idea of space is revelation of daily life. Most kitchen of the Zen hall is located at the main entrance, all rooms in the Zen hall head toward the courtyard, and functions in rooms like storages are not hidden. The adulterated daily life and non-daily life indicate reduced conventional formats to pursue non-daily space within the daily life that forms continuous denial due to the entrance and symbolic device of the temple.
At fourth, the state of transcendental integration that is not biased into existence or non-existence is the moderation, or the mean. Within the ecosystem, living beings have their own roles. In the integration that may not be categorized as harmful or beneficial beings, implementation of the great self-consciousness is valid, and such implements the unification with wholesomeness of nature. Away from dichotomic aspect of value, it is the vacancy of truth and meaninglessness with infinite characteristics, or the aspect filled with vacancy. The structural idea as the above is categorized into ① implementation of non-existence and non-vacancy and ② the level of silence; the format of implementing non-existence and non-vacancy is to form the integrated body among vacancy, time, space, and nature, and such form consequently forms anti-gravitational structure and amorphological state of structure to implement the level of silence.
