This study was conducted to analyze the relationship among climatic factors (monthly temperature and precipitation) and radial growth of Pinus densiflora, Larix kaempferi and Pinus koraiensis in South Korea. To determine climate-growth relationships, cluster analysis was applied to group climatically similar surveyed regions for each species, and a dendroclimatological model was developed to predict radial growth for each climate group under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios for greenhouse gases. The cluster analysis showed four climate groups (Clusters 1-4) from 10 regions for P. densiflora and L. kaempferi, and three climate groups (Clusters 1-3) for P. koraiensis. For P. densiflora, Cluster 1 includes Uljin and Yeongdeok in the east-coast region; Cluster 2 includes Hoengseong and Gwangneung in the central inland region; Cluster 3 includes Yesan and Seocheon in the midwestern region; and, Cluster 4 includes Yanggu, Jeongseon, Inje and Pyeongchang in the Baekdudaegan Mountain region. For L. kaempferi, Cluster 1 includes Inje and Pyeongchang in the Baekdudaegan Mountain region; Cluster 2 includes Hongcheon, Gwangneung, Yangpyeong and Hoengseong in the central inland region; Cluster 3 includes Gangneung in the east-coast region; and, Cluster 4 includes Taebaek and Muju in the midsouthern inland region. For P. koraiensis, Cluster 1 includes Chuncheon, Hongcheon, Gapyeong and Gwangneung in the central inland region; Cluster 2 includes Mt. Odae and Mt. Seorak in the Baekdudaegan Mountain region; and, Cluster 3 includes Sancheong and Namwon in the southern inland region. The relationships between climatic factors and radial growth were analyzed by the response function analysis. The R2 of P. densiflora ranged from 0.54 to 0.77 depending on the four Clusters. The radial growth of P. densiflora was negatively influenced by current July and August temperatures (p<0.05) and current August and September precipitation (p<0.05). The R2 of L. kaempferi ranged from 0.38 to 0.74 depending on the four Clusters. The radial growth of L. kaempferi was positively affected by current April temperatures (p<0.05), but negatively affected by current August and September precipitation (p<0.05). The R2 of P. koraiensis ranged from 0.43 to 0.71 depending on the three Clusters. The radial growth of P. koraiensis showed negative relationships with current February and July temperatures (p<0.05), and current January and July precipitation (p<0.05). The dendroclimatological models (prediction equations for growth index) were developed through 34 climatic variables and standardized residual chronology for each climate cluster of P. densiflora, L. kaempferi, and P. koraiensis., Four climatic variables were used in the prediction models (R2 values between 0.38∼0.58) for P. densiflora, 2 to 5 climatic variables were used in the models (R2 values between 0.31∼0.43) for L. kaempferi, and, 2 to 4 climatic variables were used in the models (R2 values between 0.35∼0.49) for P. koraiensis. The suitability of the prediction model was evaluated and verified by mean difference, standard deviation of difference, and standard error of difference. For each of the climate clusters for P. densiflora, L. kaempferi, and P. koraiensis, the growth simulations obtained from two climate-change scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5) were used for growth prediction. The two climate scenarios were applied to the selected study for the years 2030, 2050, 2070, and 2100. Overall, the radial growth rate of P. densiflora tends to increase in Cluster 4 and gradually decrease in Cluster 2. The growth rate in P. densiflora Cluster 3, which has high average temperature, drops the most, and the growth rate in Cluster 1 shows the largest differences between two RCP scenarios. The predicted radial growth rate of L. kaempferi tends to decrease after 2070 under the RCP 4.5 scenario. The variation in growth rates of Clusters 1 and 2 shows similar trends with the Clusters 3 and 4. Under the RCP 8.5 scenario, the growth rate of L. kaempferi tends to decrease after 2050, and the Clusters 1 and 3 show similar radial growth rate. However, the growth rate of the Cluster 2, which has a high average monthly temperature, shows -20.4% of radial growth rate under the RCP 4.5 scenario and -27.7% under the RCP 8.5 scenario, which is relatively large decrease compared to other Clusters. In the case of P. koraiensis, the radial growth rates of the Clusters 2 and 3, which grow at high elevation, tend to increase until 2100. In contrast, Cluster 1, which grows at low elevation, tends to decrease with a large difference of -11.6% under the RCP 4.5 scenario and -29.6% under the RCP 8.5 scenario. Thus, the growth rate of P. koraiensis, which is a boreal species, could increase along with increasing temperature up to a certain point. Overall, the growth simulations under changing climate scenarios predicted that radial growth rates will decrease as climate change progresses in all three species, except for the Clusters that grow in high-elevation areas. This study provides basic understanding and information for preparing species management/conservation and planning sustainable forest management under rapidly changing climates in Korea.
