The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of proprioceptive motor control program (PMCP) and treadmill training (TT) on the balance and walking in the patients with stroke. This study was carried out on 28 inpatients with treatment post stroke at B hospital in Sungnam. All of the participants were randomly assigned into three groups : PMCP group (n=10), TT group (n=9) and control group (n=9). Each group received PMCP and TT for 3 sessions, 30 minutes per week during 6 weeks. BBS was measured to evaluate the static balance before/after intervention and TUG test was measured for dynamic balance. And GAITRite was used for evaluating the results of gait ability. Wilcoxon signed rank test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for statistical analysis The results were as follows: Firstly, PMCP group was significantly increased in BBS score(p<.01) and significantly decreased in TUG test before/after intervention(p<.01). TT group was increased in BBS score and decreased in TUG test, but not statistically significant. Control group was increased in BBS score significantly(p<.01) and decreased in TUG test significantly(p<.05). Each group of three was not statistically significant to BBS & TUG test. Secondly, PMCP group was statistically significant to velocity, cadence, step time, cycle time, stance time, double limb support time improved(p<.01) before/after intervention, but not significant to swing time, single limb support time. TT group was statistically significant to velocity, cadence, step time on non-paretic side, cycle time, stance time, double limb support time improved(p<.01) before/after intervention, but not significant to stem time on paretic side, swing time, single limb support time. Control group was statistically significant to step time on non-paretic side, cycle time, swing time, stance time, double limb support time(p<.01), but not significant to velocity, cadence, step time on paretic side, single limb support time. There was a significant correlation among three groups in cadence, cycle time, swing time on non-paretic side and single limb support time on paretic side, but not significant to the others. Third, PMCP group was statistically significant to step length, stride length, functional ambulation score(FAS) improved(p<.01) before/after intervention. TT group was statistically significant to stride length, FAS improved before/after intervention(p<.01), but not significant to step length. Control group was statistically significant to stride length, FAS improved(p<.01) before/after intervention, but not significant to step length. There was not a significant correlation among three group. In conclusion, PMCP implemented for 6 weeks was effective on the balance and gait in the patients with stroke. So PMCP should be used actively when treating the stroke patient. And more effective motor control program should be developed based on this study and has come into wide use in clinical treatment.
