This study examined the relationship between variables related to personal history and the details of traffic accident in order to measure and predict traffic accident offenders’ post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study was conducted with 428 traffic accident offenders by testing the hypothesis that the intensity of PTSD would be different according to the variables related to personal history and the details of traffic accident. When the fitness‐for‐service of PCL‐5, scale for measuring PTSD, was evaluated through correlation analysis and the comparison of reliability with the existing PCL, high reliability and correlation were observed. In addition, the detection rates of PCL and PCL‐5 were 21.26% and 19.16%, respectively, showing little difference, so PCL‐5 was found to be adequate as a new diagnosis standard. In the first hypothesis on the intensity of PTSD according to personal history variables such as gender, age, driving experience, and driving style, no significant difference was observed in the intensity of PTSD. In the second hypothesis on the intensity of PTSD according to the details of traffic accident, the intensity of PTSD was significantly different according to the seriousness of the victim’s physical injury and whether to have a criminal punishment. Based on these results, stepwise multiple regression analysis was made for predicting traffic accident offenders’ PTSD, and the seriousness of the victim’s physical injury, whether to have a criminal punishment, and the seriousness of the offender’s physical injury were used as the input variables of the model. Among them, the seriousness of the victim’s and the offender’s physical injuries had a positive effect, and whether to have a criminal punishment had a negative effect. In the results of analyzing diagnosis of exclusion/possibility through discriminant analysis, which was to see how much the model obtained through regression analysis could explain PTSD diagnosis, This model predicted and explained 18.4% of the entire population, and its sensitivity and specificity were .524 and .714, respectively. This study is meaningful in that, different from previous studies, it attempted to view offenders as the subjects of PTSD. In addition, while previous studies focused on the type of traumatic event and personal history as the predictors of PTSD symptoms, this study expanded the scope to diverse variables including the cause and process of traumatic events.
