The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of synthetic phonics as a teaching method for EFL reading-challenged students. Traditionally, Korean elementary school students have been taught new vocabulary, both L1 and L2, by memorizing “sight words,” or short, high-frequency words. Teaching reading by the use of synthetic phonics however, has proven to be more efficient and accessible for those reading-deficient young students.
Synthetic phonics begins by teaching children individual phonemes as letters, then blending those phonemes to sound out individual words. Using synthetic phonics as a teaching tool, students are not expected to use traditional strategies such as whole-word recognition or cues from context, grammar, or pictures.
This study adopted research methodology and data collected through direct observations, field notes, interviews, and teacher journals. Experimental progress tests were administered both before and after synthetic phonics instruction. The experimental program duration was four months, targeting four EFL-reading-challenged students. The experimental classes for the synthetic phonics described in this study were taught forty minutes a day, five days a week. All students improved reading scores and three out of four met the author’s goal objectives in affective factors.
Firstly, Synthetic phonics improved student phoneme-grapheme recognition by step-by-step instruction that replaced the older, less effective sight-word system. This innovation vastly improved student pronunciation and allowed further L2 reading progress.
Secondly, the implementation of synthetic phonics as an EFL instructional tool enhanced student study effectiveness and encouraged student interest. In addition, synthetic phonics improved student confidence and their degree of class participation. Finally, EFL student anxiety levels decreased as a result of synthetic phonics.
