A Study of the Historical Development and Contemporary Expansion of Gayageum Music This paper examines gayageum music, the music of the representative Korean instrument, by exploring the historical development and expansion of its musical genres. I especially focus on gayageum music of the pre-modern and modern/contemporary periods, and analyze it concentration on period characteristics, performing styles, and musial idiosyncrasies. Based on this analysis, I discuss the developmental aspect of expansion as well as the significance of gayageum music from historical, compositional, and performance perspectives. The results of this research are three-fold. First, from the historical perspective, the modern period was when the gayageum began to stand out, and became the representative instrument of Korean music, despite its long prior history as an indigenous Korean instrument. The gayageum has symbolized indigenous Korean music as one of the three main string instruments of the Shilla Kingdom. However, the gayageum was relatively less symbolically significant than the geomungo, which was considered an indispensible instrument for the moral training of aristocrats. In addition, the gayageum was felt to be of less sonic importance in ensemble music. The late Joseon Dynasty, which saw the instrument excluded from samhyeonyukgak (an ensemble consisting of wind and percussion instruments), advanced the marginalization of the gayageum. Paradoxically, though, that marginalization drove the development of solo instrumental gayageum music, eventually leading to the emergence of sanjo (lit. "scattered melodies," the representative solo instrumental music) that reversed the fall in status of gayageum music. Thereafter, the gayageum became the leading solo instrument as various musical experiments were made in sanjo, and many sanjo schools were established. In other words, gayageum music came to the fore in Korean music history through an irony in which the instrument's marginalization enabled independent musical experimentation. Second, from the compositional perspective, the performance practice and composition of gayageum music traditionally — conducted in parallel by the performer—were divided into two separate musical activities, with the introduction of the Western concept of composition in the modern/contemporary period. In the pre-modern period, most pieces for gayageum were ensemble music or accompaniment for dancing and singing, and the gayageum parts were mostly arranged to provide musical structure. Gayageum music from the modern period is characterized by compositions based on "imitation" and "adoption," that is, while still based on traditional musical style, it imitates preexisting melodies and adopts melodies from other schools, creating new genres with newly-arranged musial structures. In contemporary gayageum music, as the Western concept of composition has settled into place, newly-created pieces following Western musical methods have been developed. Seven-tone scales, playing techniques from Western instruments, and harmony and counterpoint have been applied, while various types of instrumentation, ranging from solo, ensemble, and chamber music to concertos and symphonies, have been employed for gayageum music. Third, in terms of performance, gayageum music has been developed to heighten the performer's plying techniques and characteristics of the instrument. In the first half of the Joseon Dynasty, the tuning of the strings was complicated and varied, as many different musical registers and modes were applied to the instrument due to the playing technique called gyeonganbeop (producing sound without pressing the strings) used at that time. In contrast, since the second half of the Joseon Dynasty, as yeoganboep (producing sound by pressing the string) grew in popularity, tuning became simpler, yet playing techniques remain varied. Although the gayageum's role in ensemble music is regarded as insignificant because it plays only the skeleton melody with a simple rhythmic pattern, this musical limitation drove gayageum performers to cultivate their technical abilities, developing solo music with fast fingerings and expanding their musical expression, resulting in the creation of sanjo. Furthermore, the gayageum performers' technical abilities have advanced and are still developing, for the following reasons: gayageum byeongchang (singing with gayageum accompaniment) has been settled on as a standard genre, many experimental pieces using Western compositional methods are being composed, and the use of the 25-string gayageum is universal in korean traditional music orchestras. In other words, in the modern/contemporary period, as performers began to focus only on their own performances, gayageum music demanded a wide variety of musical abilities incorporating subtlety and sensitivity. Gayageum music has continuously demonstrated its vitality while experiencing the emergence and disappearance of musical genres throughout the musical history of Korea. I assert that the historical development of gayageum music has been a process of remedying its shortcomings and overcoming its musical limitations. It was the musical limitations of the gayageum in pre-modern times that propelled the advent of sanjo, and the continuing modifications of the instrument have been efforts to be relevant in changed musical circumstances. Also, the existence of many gayageum-only ensembles and their dynamic activities in today's music scene is evidence of an attempt to overcome the instrument's sonic limitations, as seen in contemporary Korean traditional music orchestras. In particular, the autonomy of the musician earned in the modern period provides the biggest impetus for the development of gayageum music. Just as today's Korean music was formed out of the musical efforts of musicians in the twentieth century, so the future of Korean music will depend on musicians today. A striving for "cultural authenticity" is not an appropriate strategy to regain the popularity of Korean traditional music, which has lost its footing against contemporary popular music. Rather, what musicians must undertake is self-questioning and thorough self-examination regarding the music they are making today. I believe the past and the present of Korean music, as this study examines through the history of gayageum music, will continue as a "new tradition" for future generations and will expand as a new musical culture.
