The number of international marriage of Korean males and foreign females has increased recently. The Southeast Asian women take big portion of the international marriage. The Vietnamese women go through physical examination, meet their husband, and get married through marriage agencies. Often they get pregnant even before adapting to the Korean society. Migrant women may go through their pregnancy followingthe Vietnamese customs or the Korean customs. The husband and the mother in law might force these women to follow the Korean customs, or the Vietnamese customs may interact with the Korean customs. This research attempts to understand the delivery culture of the Vietnamese migrant women, its meaning and cultural values. The Viet tribe forms about 85.7% of the Vietnamese population was selected as subject target. The study focused on the migrant women living in cities like Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. The study apprehended the delivery process and characteristics by looking into the delivery cultures of Korea and Vietnam through references, and by having indepth interviews with the migrant women. It also attempted to analyze the characteristics of the delivery and its meaning as the rite of passage. Most of the migrant women living in the cities were living separately from their husband’s families. But they are stressed by the interference of the husband’s family. The migrant women think that they have to follow Korean culture as they came to Korea, but they were having difficulty when the families in law were forcing the Korean culture without consideration of the Vietnamese culture. The meaning of delivery as the rite of passage to the Korean culture was evidenced by the aspect of achieving ‘housewife right’. They usually follow the opinions of the husband and his families in the beginning of their marriage life and start to acquire status. The opportunity for that chance is the ‘delivery’. It’s not that the migrant women will achieve their status right after the delivery; delivery is just an opportunity. Finally showing the family of raising the baby well will grant them the recognition. The researcher found the examples of the commendation from visiting the Vietnam, living separately from the other family members, inviting the families in Vietnam, money transfers, and management of the savings. This research proposed the characteristics and process of delivery of the Vietnamese marriage migrant women living in the cities through giving examples. Also, it apprehended the meaning of delivery as a rite of passage to the Korean culture. It proposed the characteristics of the delivery as acceptance of Korean culture, mixture of Korean and Vietnamese cultures, and utilization of the multicultural family support centers. In conclusion, the research proposed the necessity of education for the husbands, dispatch of midwives from the multicultural family support center, and changes in the treatment of Vietnam migrant women.
