In this study, the artistic characteristics and ideological root of Expressionist dance that was created by Mary Wigman to overcome an artistic concept and view of humans in the modern times and to express an essence of modern human were studied and the following conclusions were obtained. First, Expressionist dance has its ideological, social/cultural, and art historical backgrounds in the thinking of Nietzsche that provided nutrients to the avant-garde art movement, and the life-reform movement, the body culture movement, and the expressionism derived from his thought. Second, Mary Wigman's artistic sensitivity, intellectual smartness, sense of vocation and devotion to dance, and deep insight into humans and death enabled her to swiftly learn body rhythms from Jaques-Dalcroze and the meaning of 'free dance' from Rudolf von Laban and she absorbed an artistic concept of modern expressionism through exchanges with masters in the art world and psychoanalysts of the times to establish her own expressionistic philosophy of dance. She presented her representative work that integrated her thoughts in 1926 to complete Expressionist dance. She established ‘Mary Wigman Dance Group’ and Wigman Dance School to vigorously conduct work activities while showing the dances on tour in Germany and USA and she cultivated the second generation of Expressionist dance as an educator. Third, the avant-garde characteristics of Expressionist dance are embodied with the expression of pathos in the inner side, the pursuit of absolute freedom, and 'dionysian' ecstasy. This is expressed through body rhythms, transcendental power, doppelganger-like expressions, the pursuit of no music, abstract expressions, and religious ritual formality-like forms. In conclusion, Mary Wigman's Expressionist dance has a dialectical structure in which the pathos in the inner side of humans is a thesis, the form of free/absolute dance that transcended traditional aesthetics and dancing techniques are an antithesis, and the ecstasy dance that is conditions deformed through dances are a synthesis. The expression of the pathos in the inner side is a characteristic of expressionist arts, the pursuit of free/absolute dance is related to primitivism, and the ecstasy dance is concretization in the art of dancing of dionysian tragedies. Through ecstasy, dancing dancers and audience fall in the state of emotional communion. Through this, desubjectivization of individuals which is ultimately the directing point of expressionist arts and Nietzsche's art soteriology are achieved with healing and salvation of humans through dance.
