A Study of Visual Direction for the Portrayal of Emotions in the Works of Tim Burton: Focusing on the 3D monochrome film 원문보기

This paper analyzes how emotions are represented in Tim Burton's 2012 film, Frankenweenie. Frankenweenie (2012) is the world's first 3D monochrome animated film. As color plays an important role in portraying emotion, this paper aims to understand how emotions were represented through director Tim Burton's distinctive directing characteristics. In addition, this paper tries to establish a theoretical foundation for a variety of new media directing methods for the next era in which 3D images will be deployed in earnest. Analysis has been conducted in terms of camera, lighting, subject matter, and 3D directing based on human's four general emotions: joy, sadness, fear, and anger. Prior to the analysis, theoretical background research on 3D stereoscopy and monochrome was undertaken. In addition, this paper devised effective image directing methods for emotional expressions based on an analysis of various movies. To examine Tim Burton's expressional characteristics and analyze the directing of emotions more efficiently and objectively, an analysis of the directorial creation of the emotions of joy, sadness, fear, and anger in the original 1984 edition of Frankenweenie was conducted. The emotions of fear and anger were expressed effectively through extreme contrast, low-angle lighting, and camera settings with Tim Burton's unique directing skills. However, the variation of contrast and brightness in these emotions was not as great compared to the emotions of joy and sadness. Furthermore, due to the lack of auxiliary lighting, the representation of dark parts was unclear, which led to some flat-looking scenes. Based on the above analysis, the directing method of emotional expressions in the 2012 version of Frankenweenie was analyzed. In this analysis, the same four emotions that were previously analyzed were focused on, and an additional detailed analysis of 3D directing was conducted. As a result of the analysis, it was found that stronger contrast, various camera angles, and stimulating 3D images were used more so to express the emotions of fear and anger than joy and sadness. In addition, lighting that emphasized the appearance of the subject and the 3D stereoscopy shape of the characters' faces contributed to expressing the emotions more effectively. Also, the emotion of fear was dramatized by depicting the monster realistically through figures and textures that had Z-axis movement. This paper, therefore, discovered that Tim Burton directed the 2012 version of Frankenweenie with 3D effects that contributed to expressing: joy, sadness, fear, and anger dramatically in 3D monochrome by adhering to his own representative style. He also used character and background designs with grotesque and bizarre atmosphere by actively utilizing cameras and lighting.
