The purpose of this study is to examine the positive and negative experiences the students go through academically, and understand the factors that constitute such experiences. For the study, 192 6th grade students from 8 different schools around the capital city area submitted reports of their writing activities. These reports were then analyzed to interpret the students' experiences both within and outside of school system. The results are as follows. First, students' writing competence gradually improved to match that of the goals set by the elementary curriculum as they moved from lower to upper grades. The study has shown that the students understood writing in art, music and PE as writing activities, as per curriculum. Second, gender played a role in writing experience of students. For boys, activity for improving learning ability got the most votes as a positive activity, whereas spontaneous writing activities was voted the most by girls. Activity for improving learning ability was also voted the most as a negative activity by both boys and girls. In writing with electronic devices, boys seemed to use both smartphones and computers indiscriminately, but girls seemed to rely on smartphones more than computers. Third, electronic devices played a role in students' writing activities. Data showed that more students experienced writing with smartphones, rather than computers. Most students had positive experiences writing with electronic devices. Fourth, all elementary schools, regardless of grades or region, shared some writing activities. Teachers perceive journals, book reports, and dictation as universal, compulsary writing activities. Various writing competitions were held as compulsary events regardless of grades or region. Fifth, students responded better to voluntary writing than involuntary writing. It can be deduced that positive experience gained from voluntary writing acts as motivation for later activities, as is evident from recurring positive responses from the upper grades.
