Abstract
This paper compared and analyzed 10 kinds of middle school art textbooks which were published in 2013 and based on the revised curriculum in 2009 focusing on calligraphy. This research is to examine the purpose and contents of calligraphy class performed in the field of art education and to suggest the direction of its improvement.
The problem of calligraphy class in middle school is that the class is not conducted properly, and the poor ability of teacher to guide practical skill and the difficulty to secure the space and materials for calligraphy can be the reason.
The necessity and effect of calligraphy education is as follows.
First, it can grow the patience and improve the inner growth of the students.
Second, it can develop the ability to observe as well as the ability to concentrate.
Third, it can grow sensitivity and give emotional stability through appropriate self-expression.
Fourth, it can promote the understanding of traditional culture.
Fifth, it is helpful for right writing, Korean language and Chinese character.
In this research, I examined the art curriculum revised in 2009 and the system of art textbook which is the standard of text publishing and analyzed the calligraphy area of 10 kinds of middle school art textbooks.
The result is as follows.
As for the purpose and contents of calligraphy class, 10 kinds of textbooks had the purpose of ‘understanding the formativeness and beauty of calligraphy and expressing the characteristic by style’ in common. And the textbooks described the attitude, spirit and value of calligraphy and the way of using tools in the introduction. The main contents were the writing of Korean character, the characteristics of Chinese character, calligraphy, seal engraving, letter carving and ‘Chusache’.
The total number of calligraphy illustration was 315 things from 10 kinds of textbooks and Korean character and Chinese character occupied the most part. The number of illustration that the students can practice with it was 31 things. The character with 8 strokes was the most by stroke and the type of vertical writing was more than the type of horizontal writing by type.
The number of illustrations in each textbook was from 22 things to 52 things.
The content of phrase was for the cultivation of student’s mind, and the writers of calligraphy area were not the expert of calligraphy but the present teachers who had majored in art education.
On the basis of the analysis, I would like to suggest the direction of improvement about calligraphy curriculum on art textbook and the editing form of art textbooks.
First, regarding the contents, the range of calligraphy contained in textbook should be extended. Not only expression class but also appreciation class is needed and the writing of Chinese character as well as the writing of Korean character is necessary in expression class.
Second, because the existing contents cannot provide the in-depth training of calligraphy, more various contents should be complemented. So teachers can restructure a curriculum by each grade.
Third, the contents for creativity should be composed in order to cause interest. For example, art textbooks might contain process of contemporary calligraphy works and understanding of famous contemporary calligraphy artists’ work.
Fourth, the calligraphy expert as well as present teachers should participate in writing in order to improve the expertise of calligraphy education.
Fifth, the introduction of digital textbook and e-textbook should be adapted to art textbook for appreciation of high quality illustration and self-directed learning.
Sixth, the textbooks for the volume of one class should be displayed at art room in order to be read by students. So the dissemination of high quality textbook can be possible and it can complement the poor preparing of students.
According to the result, I hope that this paper will be helpful for the improvement of calligraphy area in art textbook. In addition to this, I also expect that the school can understand the educational effect of calligraphy and the teachers can open calligraphy class utilizing club activity or extra-curricular activity.
