A sandwich panel with polyurethane insulation has been widely adapted in a building construction industry in recent years due to the excellent insulation performance and workability. However, the polyurethane insulation foam has caused serious fire problems in various occasions due to its weakness to the external heat and massive smoke generation. Historical fire incidents in recent years have been indicative this vulnerability of polyurethane sandwich panel. There are many research being conducted to improve the fire performance of the polyurethane sandwich panel and yet maintain the virtue of excellent insulation performance. A phenolic resin foam is one of newly studied materials recently. In this study, a fire performance of three insulation foams including a generic polyurethane foam, a flame retarding polyurethane foam and phenolic resin foam was evaluated by various fire tests. The fire tests include a cone calorimeter test with different external heat flux conditions and two gas toxicity tests-animal test and gas sampling test. Obtained fire characteristics including heat, smoke and gas toxicity of three insulation foams was analysed for the fire performance evaluation. From fire tests in various external heat flux conditions (20 kW ~ 50 kW), a generic polyurethane foam showed the highest rank in the heat, smoke and gas toxicity levels. In addition, a fire retarding polyurethane foam was not easily ignited under low external heat flux level during the cone calorimeter test and the test results indicated the lowest average heat release rate and total heat released level among three insulation foams. A phenolic resin foam, meanwhile, showed more vulnerable heat characteristics than the fire retarding polyurethane foam, but had much better smoke characteristics than the generic polyurethane foam. To conclude, the generic polyurethane foam was ranked in the lowest fire performance level in respect of heat characteristics. The phenolic resin foam marked in the second and the fire retarding polyurethane showed the highest fire performance level among others. For the smoke and gas toxicity performance from the toxicity tests, the phenolic resin foam had much better performance level comparing other two materials. In addition, the phenolic resin showed the lowest gas toxicity index from NES 713 test. Considering the fire performance evaluation results overall, it has been concluded that the application of phenolic resin foam will reduce the level of fire hazard in building structure where the generic polyurethane sandwich panels are currently demanded.
