Graphene is an ideal reinforcing nanocarbon material for high performance polymer composites that exhibits excellent, electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Particularly, the combination of graphene with conducting polymers gives rise to novel nanomaterials that can be used for variety of electrical applications. However, the issues related to the existing state-of-the-art methods still need to be addressed to improve not only the effective dispersion of graphene in the polymer matrix but also the synergetic effect through high interfacial interactions between graphene and polymer. To achieve these goals, graphene was functionalized with conducting polymers by covalent grafting approach in the present study. Particularly, Cu(I) catalyzed Huisgen [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition click chemistry and esterification reaction were used for graphene functionalization. This study was carried out in three parts as follows: First, the processable conducting poly(3-thiophene acetic acid)-graphene nanocomposites were prepared through an esterification reaction. The nanocomposites showed high dispersion in N, N'-dimethylformamide with good electrochemical properties due to the covalent bonding between conducting polymer and graphene. Using the high dispersible nanocomposites, the air-operable actuators were fabricated in three layers of composite/solid polymer electrolyte/composite by spin coating. As a result, the actuator demonstrated a good actuation behavior in the low applied voltage of 2 - 4 V, which is due to the synergistic effect between graphene and conducting polymer. Secondly, the novel self-doped conducting polypyrrole/graphene nanocomposites were synthesized by click chemistry reaction. The water soluble polymer, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) with covalently attached anionic dopants (SO3-) in their backbone was covalently grafted to graphene and polypyrrole by click chemistry reaction. The nanocomposites showed the increased conjugation of polypyrrole as evidenced by the shift of absorption peak to higher wavelength in UV/Vis spectra measurements. Morphological observations showed the exfoliated state of graphene sheets with fine coating of conducting polypyrrole on its surface. Further, the nanocomposites exhibited high electrical conductivity of 0.26 S/cm due to synergistic effect between self-doped polypyrrole and graphene sheets. Thirdly, the nanostructured polyaniline was covalently grafted to the graphene sheets using click chemistry and rapid mixing polymerization. The intrinsic properties of graphene sheets were preserved to a certain extent in the nanocomposites. Microscopic observations revealed that the polyaniline was formed in a fibrous form in the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites exhibited excellent electrochemical properties with high stability over repeated cycles because of high interfacial interaction between polyaniline and graphene. Moreover, the nanocomposites showed good electrical conductivity of 1.4 S/cm due to covalent grafting of fibrous polyaniline in its emeralidene conductive state with graphene. In summary, the findings of the present work show the possibility for the fabrication of high performance conducting polymer/graphene nanocomposites which can be used as actuators and conducting materials with high electrochemical properties. The click coupling reaction was found to be a very effective method to covalently attach the conducting polymer with graphene and achieve high synergistic effect. The conducting polymers/graphene nanocomposites developed in this study may open up the new window for preparing high performance actuators, secondary rechargeable lithium batteries, sensors, and biosensors.
