This study aims to examine experiences of females who have grown up with siblings with disabilities, and in-depth understanding of the life of non-disabled female siblings. A purposive sampling strategy was used for this study. Six participants who have grown up with disabled siblings were recruited and they were asked for their informed consent prior to entering this research. Data were collected from Jan 2012 to Feb 2013. The final main theme was the life as change the period and the new beginning, and sub-theme being accordance with the last theme was the hand, want to hold. The summarized general descriptive structures which are made up with the relationship between factors according to the Giorgi's phenomenological method are as follows. Participants have grown up with burdensome and hardship because they had to play a role as the mother and the adult without their will. Sometimes, the heavy responsibilities lied with the participants because they were sisters of disabled siblings. While participants tried to divert the parents' attention and affection from their disabled siblings to them, they felt a burden with concentrated attentions and supports to them. Participants have endured a tough life due to family troubles. They suffered from social biases when people discovered the existence of their disabled siblings. In addition, participants reacted negatively to their family and siblings since they felt fear about people's discrimination. After these negative reacting, they felt guilty. However, they tried to adapt to the circumstance developing their strength and coping skills. After they reached adulthood, they realized that the old coping skills and the social biases are still existed. Even though, they wanted to try more for the new beginning and the change of their life. The implications of this study are as followings. First, this study aims to understand the nature of their experiences from the non-disabled siblings' point of view. Thus, this study makes an issue of the meaning of the non-disabled sisters' lives. Second, this study has a significance to in-depth understanding of the experience changing process from their childhood, school age, juvenile, and adulthood. Practical social work approaches will be required based on the growth processes and experiences. Third, many studies have generalized disabled sibling and non-disabled sibling. However, this study overcome the limitation, and provides in-depth understanding of their lives. In addition, this study has unique implication since it handles parenting skills of disabled siblings and its impact on the next generation. Finally, this study tries to change the perspective and approach toward females who have grown up with disabled siblings. Specifically, various perspectives and implications of the social work practice such as an intervention and an appropriate time, problematic behaviors, ostensible positive characteristics are discussed. A new perception of females who have experiences with the disabled siblings is also suggested as improving, growing, and active women.
