Most Korean cultural heritage buildings are wooden structures. Among them, a considerable number are painted using a technique called Dancheong – traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings. Wooden buildings offer several advantages. They are environmentally friendly, easy to build and durable. Unfortunately, they are disadvantageous in a number of ways due to their constant exposure to open air. Fluctuating temperatures and humidity damage the structure as wooden components expand and contract. Also, micro-organisms cause the wood to decompose, and pests can easily cause damage as well. According to oral tradition, apart from its decorative purposes, dancheong is used to compensate for these aforementioned shortcomings by coating the wooden surface with a film of paint. The layer of paint protects the structure against biodeterioration including decomposition caused by humidity, and damage caused by pests. However, such function of dancheong has been based on obscure assumption and very little scientifically proven evidence. Thus, this dissertation serves a dual purpose, a) a humanities based research on painting techniques and materials used in dancheong, and b) an experiment to prove whether the paints and pigments used in the bottom layer of dancheong offer protection against biodetrioration that occurs on the surface of wooden materials. First part of this research is an inquiry into the types of timber – which make up the structural frame of Korean cultural heritage buildings – and the internal structure of each type of wood. In particular, it investigates the strengths and weaknesses of the most commonly used species of trees. Studies reveal that most Korean cultural heritage buildings use conifers such as pine trees. Conifers are prone to pest and bacterial damage. Especially, for Buddhist temples – of which many are heritage buildings – are located in humid regions and suffer severe termite and bacterial damage as a result. The second part of this study looks into publications, Standard Specification of Properties, protocols etc. on the subject of dancheong in order to investigate its definition, objective, process, coloring techniques etc. Results show that literature explaining the definition, objective, process, painting technique of danchoeng is available yet they fail to specify exactly which part of it protects the wood. The purpose of dancheong is explained however most of the current literature focuses on the middle layer, which serves a visual purpose, but not the top or bottom layer. The third part of this thesis researches pigment and agglutinative agents used in the bottom layer which is closely related to the protection of wood among the layers of dancheong. This study finds the scope of preservation and issues related to chemical reactions by investigating the properties and ingredients used in the bottom layer. Also it classifies and studies the role and function of dancheong according to its layers. The top layer protects the wood from abiotic elements such as heat, wind, water, stains etc. The middle layer serves a visual purpose which the current publications on dancheong seem to explain. Finally, the bottom layer forms the most immediate relationship with the wood, and has the highest correlation to biodeterioration. The bottom layer, which is the most important part of this research, is subdivided in line with existing protocols, reports, and dissertations. During the course of this study, it was evident that the bottom layer could be further categorized into the Posu layer, Batang layer, and Gachil layer. The Posu layer applies boiled and diluted agglutinative agents such as gelatin or isinglass. These adhesive ingredients penetrate deeply into the wood and act as the medium that connects the inner structure of the timber and paint. Also the agglutinative agents in the Posu layer has to be made of the same material used in the Batang, Gachil, middle layer etc. to prevent any compatibility issues from occurring. This Posu layer is crucial, and when different ingredients are used for the adhesive materials, their properties make it difficult to bond and cause various problems such as bubbling, exfoliation, cracking etc. The Batang layer ensures a smooth and level surface. Therefore it mainly uses body pigment such as Hobun (aleuron) and Milthaseung (litharge) to fill the gaps rapidly. Although pine trees, which are weak of timber pest and bacteria, necessitate the Batang layer yet this process has been blatantly omitted. Both the Standard Specification of Properties for the Repair of Cultural Heritage Buildings and Standard Quantity per Unit fail to mention this process. The Gachil layer refers to the paint applied on the margins of the building material. A color is selected regardless of the patterns. The Gachil layer is a uniform coat of paint applied to help the top layer stand out. Not only can the Gachil layer be specified into Neorok Gachil and Sukganju Gachil, but older publications reveal there are also Jeongbun Gachil, Hwangto Gachil, Yuksek Gachil, Jangdan Gachil etc. Finally, an experiment on pests and bacteria, which causes significant biodeterioration problems against Korean heritage buildings, is carried out as part of this study. The pine tree – the most popular material for Korean cultural heritage buildings – is selected as the test subject. On the pine tree test specimen, traditional bottom layers of paint for dancheong including Sukganju, Neorok, Hobun, Jangdan is chosen, and agglutinative agents using gelatin and acryl are used as specified by the Standard Specification of Properties to create the test material. To quantitatively measure the effects of termite or rot fungus, anti-insect and anti-bacterial tests as per Standard number 4 of the Korea Forest Research Institute’s Timber Preservation Lab are conducted. Test results show that colored specimens suffer less damage from insects and micro-organisms co
