Abstract A Study on the Floor Impact Sound Attenuation in Finishing Materials Type for Reduction of Noise Between Floors Kim, Jea Kyu (Supervisor Lee, Yong Han) Dept. of Housing Plan and Design Graduate School of Housing Seoul National University of Science and Technology Annual average increment of Korea's apartment house is 5.6% which is substantially decreasing as a result of current low grow rate of the nation but the share is still steadily increasing. As mentioned, most of the apartment houses which is a representative dwelling pattern consisting of walls having wall construction that supports the weight of slabs. Since each household shares walls and floors, the impact sound is difficult to be reduced. Noise issue of compact buildings such as apartment houses is becoming a major social issue. In particular, as regulation regarding light and heavy impact sound being mandated, economical and efficient technology solving the impact sound is being recognized as a core factor when building an apartment. As floor impact sound of apartment house becoming a social issue, the Ministry of Construction & Transportation(current Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and transport) has raised the slab thickness regulation for wet ondol system from 2005's 「Permission and maintenance standards for floor impact sound insulation structure of apartment house」. It also regulated the performance standard to 50dB of heavy weight impact sound and 58dB of light weight impact sound which can satisfy the specification criteria. Also, recently, criteria for floor noise has been reinforced so that 30% more compensation can be received compared to conventional regulation. Despite the reinforcement of penalty policy and establishment of neighbor center, floor noise issue is becoming more severe and insulation performance of 210mm standard floor structure has been revealed to be poor. Researches and product inventions are being variously processed but the actual effect is not being able to satisfy the expectation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to select the material widely being used among households for reducing floor noise and analyze the actual effect of such insulation material. Summary of our conclusion is as following. First, finishing material has been revealed to take a major portion of floor impact sound reduction. Therefore, Various developments of and research on floor finishing materials for reducing floor noise of existing apartments should be needed. Second, floor noise reduction effect of finishing material and the thickness of it has been revealed to have proportional relation. Therefore, for floor noise reduction of apartments which was built before 2005's 「Permission and maintenance standards for floor impact sound insulation structure of apartment house」, the thickness of floor finishing materials should be thickened in order to reduce the floor impact sound which will affect the floor noise. Third, floor noise reduction effect was revealed to differ as the elasticity of material. In particular, PVC sheet showed the most substantial effect on floor noise reduction while low-elasticity materials such as board and tile showing inadequate effect. Therefore, materials having double joint structure which can reinforce boards or tiles can be complexly used in order to reduce floor noise. Finally, as floor noise becoming a social issue, various solutions are being suggested but researches and policies for existing apartments are still short. Therefore, these facets are urgently needed for alternatives for reducing floor noise.
