ABSTRACT A Study on the Perception of Teachers and Parents Regarding to Safety Education for Smart Devices Ma, Hye-Mi Major in Early Childhood Education Department of Early Childhood Education The Graduate School of Education Ducksung Women's University The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of teachers at early childhood education institute and parents about the safety education of smart devices and compare the difference of perception between teachers and parents. For this study, the research questions are set as follows. Research Question 1. Are there any different perceptions between teachers at early childhood education institute and parents regarding to safety education for smart devices? Research Question 2. Are there any different perceptions between teachers at early childhood education institute and parents regarding to the problem of safety education and activation plan for smart devices. This study was done targeting for teachers who are in charge of 3 to 5 year old children at child care centers and kindergartens and the children's parents in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. A total of 220 questionnaires for teachers of child care centers(120 copies) and kindergarten(100 copies) were distributed from April 28, 2004 to May 16 in person, by postal mail, e-mail or mobile and collected 198(90%) out of them, and 255 copies(91%) were collected from the total 280 questionnaires for parents using child care centers(180) and kindergartens(100). Among the collected questionnaires, 433 copies excluding 20 questionnaires with insufficient or insincere responses were used for the final analysis. The questionnaire was revised and modified by the researcher for this study with reference to 'The Needs and Contents for Media Safety Education' by Lee, Gisook, et al.(2011), 'The Category and Activity Method of Electronic Media' by Ministry of Health and Welfare et al.(2013), 'A Teacher's Guidebook for Media Safety Education Program' by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning(2013), and Teacher’s Understating and Operating status of Electronic Media and Electronic Media Education by Joo, Hyojeong(2009). On the basis of the collected data, χ² test and independent sample t -test were conducted to investigate the difference of perception between teachers at early childhood education institute and parents regarding to the safety education of smart devices and the open-ended questionnaires were suggested on the basis of the similar opinions between the two groups. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, it showed a significant difference between the groups of teacher and parent in regards to educational experience about smart devices and risk of using smart devices for children. It had no significant difference between the groups of teacher and parent in regards to smart devices effecting on children and the level of interest in smart devices. It showed a significant difference between teachers and parents in regards to perception of recognizing whether safety education of smart devices is included in the Nuri curriculum and the necessity level of safety education for smart devices. Most of teachers and parents responded that safety education for smart devices is needed while some of them did not agree with its necessity and there was no difference of perception between the two groups. It showed a significant difference between the teachers and parents among the items of necessity of safety education for smart devices including 'the effect of using smart devices on children's health', 'the necessity of educating about the risk of overindulgence in smart devices', 'the necessity of educating about the ethics consciousness on internet', and 'the necessity of educating about the choice and utilization of self-protecting from harmful smart devices'. On the contrary, both teachers and parents highly perceived 'the necessity of guidelines to criterion of appropriate set time during the use of smart devices' and they showed no difference in perception. It had no difference of perception between teachers and parents regarding to guidance principle of safety education for smart devices, proper instructional media, and proper type of activity. Although teachers and parents had in common with perception at high rates that children aged 3 to 5 are desirable for implementing safety education of smart devices, there was difference in perception for any other aged children, showing a significant difference between the two groups. In addition, it showed a significant difference between the perception of teachers and parents regarding to a proper frequency of safety education for smart devices, a proper type of group for implementing safety education of smart devices, a proper practitioner, a necessary material for implementing education, and a proper educational site. Second, there was no difference between the two groups in regards to the experience of safety education for smart devices, the related education for smart devices, and the level of participation in training courses. It showed a significant difference between the perception of teachers and parents regarding the immediate problems to address the failure or passiveness of implementing safety education for smart devices, and activation of safety education for smart devices. Among open-ended questions regarding to implementing safety education for smart devices and complementing problems, teachers and parents perceived commonly that 'it is necessary to implement safety education for smart devices connected with early childhood education institute and home'. Accordingly, it also needs to put forth a multilateral and continued effort for enhancing the effectiveness of safety education for smart devices and to make a national effort for its actual implementation.
