This research seeks to explore the meaning of narrative therapy, which is one method of post-modern therapy and is known as a new counseling approach. Those counselors who encounter narrative therapy for their first time say that it is a counselling approach that they want to apply in counseling practice. Nevertheless, they acknowledge that there are many difficulties in applying the narrative therapy in practice. Thus, this research has sought to assist understanding on the narrative therapy and to explore its meaning by examining the background in which the counselors using the narrative therapy counseling select such method, the role of counselors in narrative therapy, and counseling process and method. In order to do so, this research has conducted an in-depth interview with five narrative therapy counselors and analyzed their narratives. The research result based on the analysis is as follows. First, regarding the background of selecting the narrative therapy, the analysis showed that the counselors had unsatisfied and pressured feelings from the structural counseling approach; however, they were attracted to the narrative therapy, a counseling approach in a new paradigm. In addition, the analysis showed that the counselors have been looking for the philosophies and theories in the narrative therapy. Second, counselors appeared to pursue participatory counseling, in which the counselor and a client mutually fulfill their responsibilities, from the narrative therapy. Moreover, the counselors stated that it is necessary to have curiosity and a ‘not knowing position’ of the life of the client. In addition, it could be confirmed that a decentralized but influential attitude of the counselors is necessary to allow the clients to become specialists of their own lives and to resolve their issues on their own. Third, counselors stated that they do not establish any counseling objective for the process and the method of the narrative therapy. The narrative therapy counseling appeared more effective when it is focused on the narratives of the clients rather than the procedures or the process and when it has a semi-structural format or no structure form at all. The conclusion based on the research results are as follows. Those counselors who have selected the narrative therapy appeared to acknowledge it as a new paradigm in counseling, different from the existing counseling methods. The narrative therapy requires the counselors to play the different role from the structural counseling approaches. The counselor and the client in narrative therapy purse a relationship as friends or colleagues instead of the professional counselor and the client who need expert’s help to solve the problem. Such relationship allows the counselor to be curious about the client and eager to get to know more of the client. Consequently, the narrative therapy showed that the counselor would continuously ask questions to the client rather than engage in emphatic responses to acknowledge the emotions of clients. In addition, because the narrative therapy values the formation of the relationships with clients, the counselors did not focus on establishing an objective or a process to solve the client’s problem. In conclusion, this research provides some suggestions in counseling. Through the research on what kinds of difficulties new counselors encounter for their first counseling, it would be a countermeasure for growing the new narrative counselors. Therefore, the research based on the clients’ experiences is expected to clarify the contributing factors of the narrative therapy counseling to resolution.
