This study aims to examine the effects of narrative therapy by analyzing programs that has studied the outcomes of domestic narrative therapy. Meta-analysis was used as the research method, and based on the analysis results, tried to provide basic data on the use of narrative therapy and follow-up studies.
For this study, first searched for theses and journal articles using RISS, KISS, DBpia and other major databases. Setting the search period until February 28, 2019, about 160 papers were found by mainly searching for ‘story therapy’ and ‘narrative therapy’. Among them, excluded all of the ineligible articles such commentaries, presentations, and theses published in journals. Additionally, papers that doesn’t include narrative treatment of White and Epstion(1990) were excluded. A total of 117 papers were collected(42 theses, 75 journal articles) and out of them, 34 papers(66 study results) were selected for the analysis by the result of detailed examination according to PICOS standard.
The excluded papers included 41 non-empirical studies that dealt with theoretical considerations and techniques of narrative therapy, and 25 empirical studies that qualitatively described counseling process applying narrative therapy. Excluding 17 papers without control groups, 34 papers were finally selected. Therefore, in this study, 66 study results were found in 34 studies that measured the effectiveness of structured narrative therapy among empirical studies. 66 study research data were coded and meta analyzed.
The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the most studied and influential subjects in narrative therapy were identified as stress, depression, and self-esteem.
Second, the total effect size of narrative therapy was calculated from 66 effect sizes in 34 papers, resulting in a total effect size of 1.4304 (p<0.001, 95% CI 1.2004∼1.6604) based on the random-effects model. This corresponds to a large effect size according to the criteria of Cohen(1988) and is a statistically significant effect.
Third, looked for the effect sizes of dependent variables(in domains of cognition, self, relationship, emotion, an action) of narrative therapy. Cognitive domain was the largest, followed by self, relationship, emotion, and action domains.
Fourth, the effect sizes calculated from each control variable of narrative therapy(subject type, goal, sub-factor, participant, group characteristic, number of participants, session, session cycle, and session time) were statistically significant, but it was confirmed to be heterogeneous in the homogeneity test.
This study was the first result of meta-analysis about the effect of domestic narrative therapy and proved the effectiveness of narrative therapy. The result suggests that more research on narrative therapy can be made on a wider variety of topics. In addition, it means that the therapeutic value is high in real life as well as in the actual field. Based on the results, the implications of narrative therapy and future research directions were discussed.
