A Study on Sunwon Lee's Growth Novels

In teaching literature, it has never been easy to teach novels meaningfully to students in the full throes of their adolescent years. When approaching literature with an attitude of analytical close reading based on reason and logic, we invariably loose the warmth and the breath of life which the original novel possesses. To teach adolescents literature which is related to life, I have placed great value on growth novels. Growth novels deal with psychological changes from immaturity to maturity within a person. The adolescent readers can sympathize or identify with the protagonists in facing their growing pains and learn how to deal with life through them. Growth novels can have a positive effect on the mental growth of the teenage reader who is in search of self-identity. On reading these novels, they are permitted to experience life indirectly with the protagonists and enjoy the chance of self-reflection.
Growth novels have positive educational effects on teenage readers by encouraging them to share the pain of the protagonists in the process of growth. In search of growth novels which can embody adolescence, I have particularly pinpointed Sunwon Lee's novels. The writer has not had much attention as an author of growth novels because most of his works were studies on the aspect of family history rather than on intrapersonal changes. Growth novels deal with stories around the protagonist's mental and emotional changes through conflict with their surroundings or within him/herself. From this aspect, Lee's novels have reason enough to be studied in depth as growth novels since they show a variety of growing pains and experiences from the protagonist’s perspective. Teenagers become adults as they pass through the familiar surroundings of family, school, and their wider social community; Lee's novels include these series of stages. Therefore, teenage readers can unequivocally gain from reading Lee's novels sympathizing with the characters and cultivating sound values for their own lives.
In search of growth novels from among Lee's work, I have focused on five novels: "Susaek, its Watery Pattern", "Looking for Horses", "Old Road to Kang-neung", "Our Stone Age", and "19-year-old". I have found some features of the growth novel among the five novels as follows; first, a feeling of absence due to lack of equating with their target and the desire to research; Second, awakening evils and conflict with their surroundings; Third, focusing on the inner voice and searching for self-identity. In "Susaek, its Watery Pattern" and "Looking for Horses" which are in the family category, there are some features of feeling of absence due to lack of equating with their target and the desire to research within the protagonists' hearts. In "Old Road to Kang-neung" and "Our Stone Age" which are based on school days, we can find some features of awakening evils and conflict with surroundings. In "19-year-old" which is about adventure, focusing on the inner voice and searching for self-identity is most notable.
As mentioned above, Lee's novels show features of growth novels. The protagonists experience growing pains such as absence and loss, which they are able to overcome and face life’s new phases. These features of absence to fulfillment, separation to unification can favorably affect the adolescent readers. Human life is a series of changes and growth and therefore teenagers can experience these changes indirectly through the reading of growth novels. On reading growth novels teenagers can have an opportunity to reflect on themselves, look back on their family, and acknowledge social absurdities and reality. Through mental wanderings and the process of reflection they become mature. It is hoped that Lee's novels will lead teenage readers to reflect upon themselves, be compassionate to other people, and understand the real world, so they can ponder on human life with a more comprehensive view.
* Key words : growth novel (bildungsroman), growing pains, Sunwon Lee, identify, self reflection, awakening evils, searching for self-identity.
