Doctoral Dissertation A Phenomenological Study on Career Development Experiences of Asperger's Disorder Adolescents Park, Seo-Jung Department of Education Graduate School Kyungsung University Advisor : Joo, Yong-Kook Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate what experience Asperger's disorder adolescents with the normal category of intelligence and autistic feature, and short of social relationship ability did in the career development process, and what the structure of experience was. The participants in this study consisted of total 12 persons: 6 adolescents (3 high school boys and 3 college students) and 6 Asperger's disorder adolescents' mothers as research assistant participants. The period of data collection covered from Dec., 2013 through May, 2014 for six months. This study was to apply the method of Giorgi’s phenomenological study in the judgment that the exploratory work should be done to provide a deeper understanding that had experienced. The in-depth interview was mainly used as data collection method, but this researcher referred to the text I committed idea or feeling, family photograph, diary, Kakao Talk, and e-mail, etc. in order to understand the situation and the matter in context. The number of interviews by study participants was continued from two times through five times variously, collected until there arose no new materials from the participants to collect sufficient data. The interview time at a time took average one hour and thirty minutes and two hours. The analysis process is consisted of four concrete stages that should follow the 'scientific phenomenology' that Giorgi suggested as follows. In the 'whole recognition' stage as the first stage, this researcher was to grasp the whole contents while read the contents transcribing the research participants' statement several times. In the second stage, this study was to classify the 'semantic unit' in the part of judgment on the meaning conversion from the perspective of education meaning conversion related to the research participants' career development experience. In this way, this study was to deduct the semantic unit from the research participants. In the third stage, this researcher tried to convert the semantic unit in order to be proper to the academic terms by using the researcher's free variation method. At the second stage, this study was to use the 'free variation method' in order to deduct the component from the semantic units described with the academic terms, and to find out the 'general structure' of experience including the correlation among the components, that is the meaning of experience. Through such analysis process, this study was to deduct final 1017 semantic units and use final 508 semantic units to analyze them. It was divided into 8 categories for the final components, summarized into 153 semantic units and then bound with 27 sub-components. To raise the validity of analysis, this researcher tried to raise consistency of research through the modification work of thematic classification, evaluated from 3 Ph. Ds in education and 1 Ph. D in social welfare. From the research findings, the essential meaning of career development experience that Asperger's disorder adolescents recognize and the structure of career development experience may be summed up as follows. In general, the career development is a process of entire change and development in life as the whole life process formed by the interaction between the individual and environment. Therefore, adolescents without disabilities have developed their career naturally at an opportune time suited for the developmental stage. On the other hand, adolescents with Asperger's disorder had understanding of their career development as a self-growth on the basis of their self-knowledge and strengths, and the process of going to prepare the work and independent living while overcoming the anxiety and anger associated with discrimination and difficulty of communication with others in society. The Asperger's disorder adolescents have many difficulties in the career development due to the ineptitude at social interaction. They have a normal range of intelligences and special talents, but the process of career development is not easy to them because of the shortage of sociality. Although they, no matter how great talents they have, go through many difficulties in our society in which does not concede the difference. When they act and talk, thinking outside the box, it is up to them to endure and suffer the peripheral response. Contrary to the adolescents without disabilities who have developed their career at the developmental stage properly, Asperger's disorder adolescents were affected by many parts like the individual peculiar disposition, personality, and external environment, etc. It differs from the learning contents that have to be learned in the process of career development compared with that of adolescents without disabilities. The things like the thoughtfulness for others, behavior method, and the method of response are extremely hard tasks to the general non-disabled adolescents. The schools or community agencies do not educate the adaptation for daily life and understanding others, and adaptation for social life separately proper to the Asperger's adolescents only. Therefore, Asperger's disorder adolescents have to suffer from the double torture of ability development and socialization according to individual talent and capacity. Their advantages are that they win the confidence of people around them because they are harmless, innocent, busy, and frank. The parents' support and interest, their own efforts, good perception of environment around them, and social support and mentors' help as cooperators are very important factors of their growth and development. On the other hand, their disadvantages are the shortage of understanding their surroundings, difficulties in the anger control, and shortage of empathy for others, etc. In addition, the bullying would lead to the school maladjustment in school age because of late trouble shooting and difficulties in the personal relations. The sensibility of individual sensor, anxiety and depression, social phobia, and thinking of impulsive suicide were obstacles to the career development. The Asperger's disorder adolescents' career development experience could be the entire experience of growth process, that is, problems arose from Asperger's disorder adolescents' internal conflicts and relationship with the people around them. The pleasure to be immersed in one theme showed in process of their career development, achievement by the others' recognition, internal dispute that they did not experience the sudden approaching situations properly, difficulties in the persona relations, and anxiety to reduce mistakes, and difficulties in the anger control, etc. were essential meanings of career development experience as they said. The structure of Asperger's adolescent career development may be divided into four sides as follows. First, as to the party factor among the factors which affected Asperger's adolescent career development, they concentrated and are immersed in the sensitiveness of sensor, clear head, and special concerned matters well. It was difficult for them to understand the social clues, and they talked and acted a little senseless. Furthermore, it was difficult for them to control their feelings like the anger, anxiety, and fear, etc., and slowed in their movements. If their thoughts and demands were not accepted when they lived in their schools and homes, they had characteristics of expressing their feelings frankly like the distraction, impulse, attack, and hyperactivity as well as the uneasiness and obsession. The skill shortage of such sociality made the relationship difficult, and they felt the sense of isolation and felt left out alone because they were not adapted to the situation to share. Although the others told them their own defects, there was a little attitude to accept. Even though they pretended to accept it in front of people, they did not change their mind when there was similar situation in other places. Furthermore, they acted in the same way as the action above, and they were seen that they would not accept the demands by the others and the surroundings. Second, as to the barrier factors and advantage factors, the advantage factors become background of gaining confidence because they were busy and frank. And, they had unusual talents with the special interest like the mathematical talent, musical talent, capacity of memorizing words, and cube, etc. They considered as such talents made them have good recognition to the people around them. This study has found out that the human relationship problems arose as barrier factors because of the problems in the anger adjustment by the late trouble shooting, and it appeared the school maladjustment, anxiety, and social phobia, etc. They experienced difficulties due to the sensibility of individual sensor. There were participants who felt their situation dismal by their speech and thoughts with the death wish, and who looked upon life as a positive experience. Third, in case of successful career development from the result of career development experience, they tried to develop their own abilities while they paid attention to their advantages and studied the relevant field. To become a computer expert, they studied or corrected their shortcomings, and they had habits of taking notes everyday in order to reduce their mistakes, and prepared while reading books in order to challenge to be writers. In case of dark school life because of the bullying by their friends, the career development was hard and difficult, so they suffered distress. They attempted suicide and often thought about death because of the negative self-recognition. They acted like the adephagia and addiction in computer games. They stammered in the presence of others, lost the thread of the story, and faced others with an anxious look. Fourth, taking a look at the direction of supporting Asperger's disorder adolescent, it required the books related to the career for Asperger's disorder adolescents as well as the teacher education to understand Asperger's disorder adolescents. It needs to help their career by making the database related to the career and employment for Asperger's disorder adolescents. Furthermore, it needed to improve the recognition of Asperger's disorder and to connect and establish the facility of apprenticeship education and related organization for the social secession prevention. The direction of supporting the career development is a factor of affecting the career development directly, so if the support will be done without problem, it could be useful to a generous portion of Asperger's adolescent career development. The implications in this research are as follows. First, Asperger's disorder adolescents could know that it required the necessity of change of recognition they were general adolescents like the non-disabled as well as the necessity of experts who could teach them through the social interest. Second, in the process of career exploration for Asperger's disorder adolescents, it requires the method of connecting their advantages and special matter of interest, and the career. Third, it needs to provide opportunity to stand as a member of society and workers as the people around them understood and encouraged Asperger's disorder adolescents' frustration, emotional confusion, and distress. In particular, this researcher considers as it requires the continuing support for the experience in the work field and adaptation to the social change. Furthermore, it is urgently needed to introduce the career development program for Asperger's disorder adolescents.
