The field of child education has witnessed a persistent increase in the number of elementary school children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who have serious difficulties doing study and making peer relationships. An early therapeutic intervention during elementary school days are significant in terms of preventive measures against a negative growth process that could influence adolescence and adulthood.
Dealing with the situation, therapeutic approaches like medical treatment and psychotherapy have been taken as therapeutic intervention, but existing therapies have shown limitations and there has been no such thing as perfect treatment so far. Therefore, the academia found interdisciplinary research necessary in treating ADHD, and intervention methods with varied combined therapies have been tried for lasting therapeutic effects.
The research on ADHD in art therapy has been found effective over the world as a valuable resource of the numerous therapies. Studies of art therapy on elementary school children with ADHD have surged since 2000, but a majority of them have focused on quantitative research to examine mainly development and effects of art therapy programs. It is, thus, thought that art therapy will develop in a balanced and integrated way when there is a continuing effort of process-centered qualitative studies. Those process- centered qualitative studies are able to make unquantifiable portions of the art therapy field more understandable.
Art therapists are one of the important therapeutic factors in art therapy for ADHD children as they stand nearest children with ADHD, shares experiences with them, and play a therapeutic role. But the importance of the art therapist factor has been relatively overlooked in actual studies. Considering the characteristics of elementary school children with ADHD, who are impulsive and have problems recognizing and describing with words their own emotions, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study on concrete experiences of art therapists in the clinical field because they lead an art therapy by participating in the process through which the children try to express their emotions through various art media.
The purpose of this study is to explore various experiences that art therapists have observed and gone through in the clinical field while conducting group art therapies for elementary school children with ADHD and then to understand the meaning and basic nature of those experiences. Characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of the elementary school children with ADHD will be examined in a new light and understood in a more accurate way, which will help art therapists to grow as a professional clinical art therapist and will provide practical information necessary in the clinical field of group art therapy. This study also intends to carry out thorough research on experiences of art therapists with a homogeneous group of ADHD children, in order to offer basic materials useful in devising art therapy programs for ADHD and training therapists. In addition, it is hoped that for the present art therapy with little qualitative research on art therapists, this study adds fundamental data to the area of theoretical research of clinical art therapy and helps future research on art therapists to go on further.
This study applied Max van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research method, and the research procedure took eleven steps consisting of focus on the basic nature of experiences, existential survey, hermeneutic phenomenological reflection and hermeneutic phenomenological writing.
The participants of this study are fifteen art therapists who obtained their master's degree in art therapy and are presently working in the clinical field. In-depth interviews were conducted one to three times for each person from March to September 2014. Data were collected until they reached a saturation point. Writings in relation with art works as well as verbal data during interviews were collected, and the literature and art works relating to the research theme were also collected as references.
The step of hermeneutic phenomenological reflection is to analyze images, writings and other data of in-depth interviews with the participants that were collected in the step of existential survey, and to derive the essential theme of experiences art therapists have while conducting group art therapies for elementary school children with ADHD. As a result, nine essential themes and thirty four sub-themes were derived and examined: 'felt one's limits but tried desperately under unexpected confusion and anxiety,' 'underwent exhaustion and frustration owing to the group composed of children with ADHD,' 'accepted children's parents as clients who a therapist should embrace, too, despite difficulties,' 'recognized as an art therapist self-regulation and colleagues' help are the foundation of one's growth,' 'did one's best as if all had been in an ADHD group on the same boat for a safe voyage,' 'witnessed the therapeutic power of art works in art therapy and used them freely,' 'enhanced experiences of the group where each one is a model of the other and stands united,' 'became aware of a new opportunity in the resonance of emotions interchanged,' 'embraced children with ADHD from a new point of view and found oneself growing with them'
Based on those themes, existential survey of experiences and writing, the following conclusions were reached in this study that aimed to understand the basic nature and meaning of art therapists' experiences in group art therapies for elementary school children with ADHD.
First, art therapists who conduct group art therapies for ADHD children often undergo confusion owing to characteristics of those children and other difficulties arising from such a group, but they come to overcome those difficulties and confusion through continuing and varied self-regulation means as a professional therapist.
