SNS(Social Network Services) and RSS(Really Simple Syndication) are two of the representative information services with Web 2.0 technology utilized in libraries. In overcoming the functional limitations of library home-pages, many libraries take advantage of SNS and RSS to provide new information services that users can get involved and share their ideas with others. Mostly, such services are used in public libraries and university libraries, and researches are also disproportionately slanted towards them. Previous researches on SNS and RSS in special libraries are hard to find.
This study reviewed definitions of special libraries and their information services. By examining the meaning of SNS and RSS, the need to take advantage of such services in special libraries were discussed. A survey of 348 publicly founded special libraries on their current status of SNS and RSS services was conducted, and the results can be summarized as follows:
1. Nine out of the 348 libraries (2.58%) were utilizing SNS and 25 libraries (7.18%) were using RSS, which shows much lower ratio than for other types of libraries.
2. Facebook was a type of SNS that was most utilized in special libraries. However, it appeared to play a role in everyday communication, rather than in transferring specialized information.
3. The main function of SNS in special libraries was instantaneous and interactive information exchange between the library and the user.
4. The topical RSS was used mostly among types of RSS in special libraries.
5. The main function of RSS in special libraries is to search.
The examination of the current state of Customized Information Services(CIS) through SNS and RSS services provided by special libraries shows that they were not utilized enough as information services that can provide specialized information for their users. The problems and issues identified by the investigation can be summarized as follows:
1. There is a significant shortage of designated personnel or librarian for SNS and RSS services.
2. The budget for SNS and RSS service personnel is increasing only little by little and distributed in small amounts.
3. There is no policy for managing SNS and RSS services.
4. Objectives for Customized Information Services(CIS) and those for running SNS and RSS services in special libraries are different.
5. There is a lack of user training and promotion for overall information services in special libraries.
The study suggests ways to improve the SNS and RSS services in special libraries as follows:
1. It is necessary to secure librarians as designated personnel for such services.
2. Distribution of increased budget for such personnel is required.
3. The library policy for managing information services including SNS and RSS services should be formulated.
4. The designated librarians should clarify the objectives of managing SNS and RSS services based on the library’s functions and roles.
5. Library users should be trained and educated for information services provided by the library.
