The presence of an audience is essential in the performing arts. In the past, audiences were considered to be just customers; spectators in a passive position, accepting the content and fictional reality of the performance without question. However, in these modern times, the role of the audience has changed from a passive role to an active one. The presence of an audience is essential in the performing arts. In the past, audiences were considered to be just customers; spectators in a passive position, accepting the content and fictional reality of the performance without question. However, in these modern times, the role of the audience has changed from a passive role to an active one. This relationship of audience members participating with actors in dramas has given performing arts a new meaning. If we look at some examples of our theatrical world in modern times, such as, the Korean traditional play, Madangguk, for example, we not only see audiences engaged as audience members, but even as members who actively participate in the performance as well. Madangguk inspired audience participation by redefining the space that would traditionally be considered stage space. For instance, in Madangguk, mirrors are strategically arranged in an open space between the actors and audience members. If desired, the audience can move about, sit, or stand freely in a circle to watch the play, which in turn, can create for the audience an open-structured atmosphere of mobility, equality, collectiveness, openness, and participation. Other examples that encourage audience participation are the street theatre and site-specific theatre genres which have been practiced frequently in modern times. In closer examination, the street theatre performance is performed on a general street by all actors and audience members using free theatre space and improvisatory expression at times which subvert the customs and practices of the traditional play; on the other hand, the site-specific performance goes a step further, in that, it can be performed at a specific location other than on a general street or at a theatre, because it may be the playwright’s intention to avoid as much as possible, any reference or location, such as a general street or theater, that could be perceived as being too traditional or historical in nature on part of the audience members. In other words, all performers involved seek new ways to interpret and express everyday life experiences, social and political meanings through new and avant-garde paradigms as opposed to traditional ones. Therefore, realism and direct communication through time (improvisation) and the uses of new kinds of theatre space are central characteristics in modern expression within the Performing Arts. Interestingly, the implementation of theatre space outside the traditional theatre has given rise to the creation of a new wave for independent thinking on both the actors and audience members alike. Performances that are set within an unconventional theatre "space" where audience members can participate demonstrate a transformation from a traditional theatre format into an avant-garde one. Thus, such an arrangement puts the audience members collectively as a co-producer. This has been mainly done as a form that generates unrehearsed moments or the event (사건) in order to intentionally bring the audience into the play, a dance drama, or a non-verbal performance while the actors are performing on stage. As there could be a basic plot written before the drama is publically performed in such avant-garde dramas, there is also the opportunity for the audience members to get involved in the play as it would give them a role in the overall production. Such an interaction between both actors and audience members provides a new experience and perception on part of the audience members. This kind of experience could also reduce the hardship that audience members in the past had been experiencing in trying to understand complicated plots in traditional fine art plays, and esoteric meanings in classical ballets, for example. Part of reducing the audience’s hardship in understanding the complex meanings within performances can be done by highlighting the use of attractive stage effects. Stage effects during performances are important for acquiring positive reactions from the audience. If the audience gives a very good reaction or an expected reaction to a given stimuli from the actors, the performance can end with very favorable outcomes, such as the playing of fun games between the audience members (collectively as a co-producer) and the actors themselves, since the main intention of the performance is for the audience members to interact and communicate with the actors. A further instance that involves audience participation within a drama play includes the citizen theatre genre. This genre seems to be the better-received by audiences, compared to other genres, as it is theatre switched from the traditional "see theatre" to the new "do theatre." In Korea, classroom programs that are run by the Seoul City troupe can be divided into three areas of performance: Pre-production Performance, Real-time or Live Performance, and Post-production performance. The purpose of the Citizen's Theater is to heighten the quality and awareness of performance for everyone in the community. Therefore, the Citizen Theater group provides a program to community members that caters to the audience's interest, and later educates many of those members more about the program in special theater classrooms on how to interact with the actors on a spontaneous level before the play is to begin. In this way, the type of audience participation in this domestic genre is diverse. Moreover, these audience participation performances in modern times can also be referred to by different names, depending on wherever such performances are performed around the world. In this paper, I analyzed two types of audience participation performances which applies to various audience participation elements within the Performing Arts genre: Version 1 "<How do I do a performance tomorrow?>" and Version 2 "<Can I also perform tomorrow?>" The two versions of performances involving audience participation, which also included RPG (Role-Playing and Games), were performances done in an open space format which progressed from the university road throughout, and was used as a means of moving and waking space for both audience members and actors alike. As this space was to be used for walking on the grounds throughout the road during the two performances, they also helped provide a sense of heightened reality and a new theater experience for the audience members. Moreover, the use of role-playing games was used as a means and a technique to facilitate the interaction between audience members and the actors within the two versions of the play as well as transforming the audience members into actors as well. Until now, we have examined the characteristics of a genre that is widely recognized as audience participation within the Performing Arts. Finally, the aspect and effect of direct and indirect acts performed in the theatre today by the audience demonstrates a concrete testimony that the audience wants an advanced method of audience participation, foregoing the traditional stance of "the audience who just passively watches a play" to practicing "the audience who collaborates together with the actors". Thus, recorded performances from "audiences who have acted" and "participated in" plays can be traced as far back to the beginning of the 20th century to today. In light of these consistent interests on part of audiences around the world within the performance culture, the art world should continue to keep alive these types of performances involving audience participation alongside with academic research in order to ensure an ongoing role for a better quality of cultural understanding for humans in future.
