The goal of this study was to investigate an effect of group dance/movement therapy on increasing self-resilience of single-parent family children after their parent’s divorce.
It was programmed to perform total 16 sessions; the 1st to 9th sessions were conducted by 2 times per a week and the 10th to 16th sessions were conducted by 1 time per a week for 60 minutes for a unit of the sessions during 4 months from July to October of 2014. The pre-interview and pre-test were performed before the program, and the after-interview and after-test were conducted after the program. It was targeted 4 single-family elementary students of the 4th grade taking the after-school classes of H Catholic Church, located in S-gu of Seoul, and having no severe psychological and behavioral disorders with consent of their parents. The research method to verify the effectiveness of this study was shown below: To measure the self-resilience, the indices of self-resilience developed by Eun-hee Park (1996) for higher grade students of elementary schools and modified‧supplemented by Ji-yeon Shin (2004) and the indices of peer relationship developed by Ladd and Kochenderfer Colerman (1996), adapted by Yu-seon Lee (1999), and modified by Ho-seon Lee (2001) to be easily understood by the 1st grade students of elementary schools were used in the pre- and after-tests; SPSS20.0 was applied for the statistics analysis to perform the paired sample t-test for the differences of the scores from the pre- and after-tests. Also, it was collected the observation records for each session written by the researcher, who was the therapist of the group, and therapist assistants and utilized interview records with
the after-school class teachers to supplement the analysis results of the quantative data. The results of this study were as followings:
First, in the test of self-resilience index, the scores in the pre- and after- test were significantly increased in the statistics (t=-6.106, p<.01). In the sub-domain of the self-resilience, the items of interpersonal relationship, vitality, and emotion-control presented significant improvement in the statistics. The number of exact recognition and expression for oneself was increased, and it was matched with the qualitative data analysis in which they became accept and adjust the difference with the others and control the emotions of oneself unlikely they had unilaterally expressed themselves.
Second, in the test of peer relationship index, the scores in the pre- and after- test were significantly increased in the statistics (t=-3.574, p<.05). In the sub-domain of the peer relationship, the items of support, self-expression, and cause of conflict presented significant improvement in the statistics. It was matched with the qualitative data analysis in which they became support, sympathize, and accept each other and their non-verbal self-expressions were extended.
These results confirmed the positive influences of the group dance/movement therapy on the vitality in which they could handle the problems in their lives more actively with different view, on the emotion-control enhancing them to approach to the problems apart from their self-emotion, and especially on the interpersonal and peer relationship having the greatest effect on the social support for the school age children.
Therefore, the results of this study
indicated that the group dance/movement therapy had the positive influence on the self-resilience of the single-family children after their parent’s divorce. The group dance/movement therapy enhanced the adaptability of children and the way of coping in horizontal relationships despite of the changes in their home and school due to divorce of their parents, playing the role of sympathy and acceptance. To provide the environment increasing the self-resilience, it positively changed the children influenced negatively by the divorce of their parents.
It implied that the children’s negative behaviors and emotional difficulties occurred by the event of divorce could be modified by empathetic and acceptable environments and thus the surrounding environment of the children was important. Moreover, the group dance/movement therapy was effective to provide the kind of environment and the changes were meaningful to change people’s negative perspectives for the single-family children after their parent’s divorce.
