This study is aimed at identifying how an online discussion program can change the debate skills of students and their attitude. To accomplish the objective, their online debate was observed, along with their follow-up discussion. It was done anonymously. This study closely analyzed and compared their changes with a case study. The participants in this study were 24 students of the 4th grade at S Elementary School in Gyeonggi-do Siheung-si, who are the class that the researcher is serving as homeroom teacher. The method of this study is as follows. First, their pre-debate was observed and analyzed. Second, an online debate program was developed with 10 sessions. Third, debates were held online and offline for 5 weeks. Fourth, the class journal of an instructor, participation review of students, and discussion results at the online community were collected as an on-site text. Fifth, the data was analyzed altogether and organized the changes of students. The findings are as follows. First, the online debate program improved the argumentation skills and verbal expression skills of students. As a result, they were able to express their views more objectively using reasonable grounds. At first, they struggled to support their opinions using proper grounds. Through the program, they explored the link between opinions and evidence and practiced writing about their views through a 6-step reasoning method. As a result, they were able to deliver their opinions more logically and systematically. Although their unity and completeness of sentences were imperfect, their discussion skills were improved as they used more valid, relevant grounds to the topic compared to their pre-debate. Also, they were able to express their stance better; it was demonstrated during the activity of making their arguments after understanding the position of opponents. Second, their ability to argue against the opponents properly was improved. During the pre-debate, they insisted on their own opinions only after listening to their opponents. During the follow-up debate, they began to change their own opinions, if their opponents had more reasonable views. Also, they became more critical of their own opinions, rather than insisting on them blindly. In other words, they developed an objective, level-headed approach, instead of a subjective, one-sided stance. Third, they actively engaged in the debate with a serious attitude. During the pre-debate, many of them didn't take it seriously, regarding it as chatting, rather than education. As a result, they talked about things irrelevant to the topic, being sidetracked and putting stickers on the writing of others. During the follow-up debate, they expressed their views actively and conducted research, taking the discussion more seriously. Fourth, they complied with Internet etiquette and debate rules. The online debate program inspired students to establish their discussion rules and learn about the importance of Internet etiquette. After learning about debate rules and deciding to comply with them, they respected the opinions of others including their opponents more. Thus, they paid more attention to language etiquette, being more considerate of others. The findings lead to the following conclusion. The online debate program improved the debate skills of students and positively changed their attitude. In other words, the program brought significant changes in terms of their skills and attitude. Thus, schools should offer ongoing debate training to make students realize that each person has different opinions and they should be respected.
