To understand contemporary pollen flow and mating dynamics needed for conservation of forest genetic resources and breeding management, variation of mating system parameters among population, parameters of pollen flow and mating system were estimated on between species and among populations.
The objectives of this experiments were subdivided into two headings. The one (chapter 3, chapter 4, and chapter 5) is estimating variation of mating system parameter among populations including seed orchard, inland population, coast population, and another one (chapter 4 and chapter 6) of that is estimating variation of mating system parameter between of Pinus thunbergii populations and Pinus densiflora population .
Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 were involving objectives of this paper and a review of mating system and pollen flow in seed orchard and natural population, respectively.
It is important that pattern of mating and mating success of seed orchard clones were estimated to assess genetic quality of seed produced in seed orchard and provide information for management of seed orchard to obtain genetic gain. In chapter 3, parameters of mating system and paternity analysis were revealed on '81 plot of Pinus thunbergii seed orchard. High level of outcrossing rates and a lot of putative pollen contributors were observed in seeds. However, high level of pollen contamination from outside of seed orchard and incomplete random mating among clones within seed orchard were observe which might result in the maintenance of genetic variation. To make an accurate estimate of genetic gain and to improve genetic quality of seeds produced in seed orchard, control of pollen contamination from outside of seed orchard may be the first option and selection of clones showing high general combining ability (GCA) from progeny test may be the second option for proceeding to the next generation seed orchard.
In chapter 4, to understand mating dynamics of Pinus thunbergii genetically , mating system parameters of Pinus thunbergii were estimated on populations located at core and edge of meta-population. Parameters of mating system and pollen flow of two Pinus thunbergii populations in Anmyeon island, South Korea, seem to have feature that high level of outcrossing rate and low level of genetic differentiation in pollen pool structure. However, parameters of mating system were varied with location and size of population. In coast population, correlation of paternity was observed higher significantly, and wide annual variation of this parameter was observed, cause of pollen dispersal pattern with anisotropy. Since heterozygosity of population have no feature that are respond within few generations, there was no significant difference of genetic variation between populations.
The objectives of chapter 5 is estimating variation of mating system parameter among populations, which were seed orchard, inland population, and coast population, and have different feature of special structure. The amount of genetic variation of each population including seed orchard, coast population, and inland population might be maintained in each generation without a loss of genetic diversity, although they have different spatial and genetic structure. It is because that the genetic diversity in pollen pool was high and conveyed to progenies generated in each population by outcross fertilization. On the other hand, There was difference of annual variation of mating system parameter among populations each of which have different density and conditions of location. In coast population, reactions towards mating circumstance seem to be great relatively. It is because a wide difference of annual variation of mating system parameter was observe in this population.
In chapter 6, to understand mating dynamics and pollen flow of Pinus densiflora, widespread dispersion in Korea, parameters of mating system and pollen flow were estimated in a dominant and continuous population in Buan, South Korea. Although the effective pollen dispersal in the population seems to be restricted, the amount of genetic variation might be maintained in each generation without a loss of genetic diversity. It is because the genetic diversity in pollen pool was high but the genetic difference between pollen donors was small under the complete random mating condition in the Pinus densiflora population in Buan.
In conclusion (chapter 7), on the bassis of feature on Pinus thunbergii, which is genetic variation within population and pollen and seed dispersed by wind, dominant cross-fertilization, strategy for management of seed orchard and conservation was sought.
