Studies on the behavior patterns of zoo Siberian tiger and wallaroo according to viewing and petting program원문보기
The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of normal zoo viewers, awareness of zoo keepers, being of viewer on zoo Siberian tiger(Panthera tigris altaica) and petting program on wallaroo(Macropus robustus). In the first study, we surveyed items related with animal welfare and zoo petting program through the questionnaire analysis surveyed by 100 general visitors and 51 zoo keepers. The major purposes of visit to the zoo were 43% of the viewing, 31% of the break and 15% of the picnic, respectively. The major functions of zoo considered by zoo visitors were 44% of the animal protection and 34% of the animal experiencing, respectively. The 45% of respondent answered to strengthen the animal experiencing program and The 45% of respondent pointed out partly being lack of chances to have a contact with animals. 69% of The visitors recognized the necessity of animal welfare and The answers to the questionnaire such as "Is feeding environment sufficient?" and "Is animal welfare sufficient?"were 76% of "No"and 81% of "No", respectively. 62.7% of zoo keepers answered that animal welfare must be put to practice. In addition, 88.3% of zoo keepers answered that the current animal welfare problems are due to zoo facility problems. 82.3% of zoo keepers have an opinion that the various programs such as petting can affect zoo animals negatively. The understanding of zoo animal welfare and the importance of strengthening of welfare were shown to be more positive in zoo animal keepers than viewers. However, there was no significant difference in evaluation values on zoo animal welfare. In the comparison about the animal experiencing, zoo animal keepers considered it not so importantly as much as zoo viewers think. In the second study, we investigated the influences of zoo visitors on three Siberian tigers behavior and the awareness of the zoo visitor. The staying time of Siberian tigers in areas near to visitor's zone generally decreased when visitors existed, and increased staying time away from visitors but there was no significant statistical difference. In the survey of visitor's awareness about zoo animals, 70.2% of visitors answered that animal welfare is needed. 17.7% of them only answered that the present animal welfare is sufficient. Moreover, 59% of visitors answered that an environmentally-friendly playing yard for zoo Siberian tigers will be helpful but still they will have wariness. In the third study, we investigated the influence of petting program on 13 wallaroos behavior and the awareness of zoo visitors related with the petting program. The staying time in feed taking zone and petting zone (area F) significantly increased during petting time (P<0.05). During the concentrated observation after feeding, the staying time in both feed taking zone and petting zone also significantly decreased (P<0.10). The feed taking behavior significantly decreased at petting time (P<0.05), and the lying behavior significantly increased at that time (P<0.10). The running behavior tended to decrease (P<0.10). The skinship acceptance rate of wallaroo during petting time was 97.4%. The major purpose of visit at the zoo of petting participants was the viewing (85%). the answers to strengthen experiencing animal and increase the contact chances of animals were 30% and 40%, respectively. The answers of "I know animal welfare." and "Animal welfare is surely needed. " were 85% and 95%, respectively. The answers about question such as "Is feeding environment sufficient?" and "Is animal welfare sufficient?"were 65% of "No" and 40% of "No", respectively. The answer mentioning that petting affects to animal welfare or behavior were 45% and 70%, respectively. However, the answers considering that petting is positive on the animal welfare or behavior were only 35% and 25%, respectively. Interestingly enough, the answers considering that petting helps human-animal interaction or understanding animals were 60.6% and 65%. respectively. All together, zoo animals were affected by zoo visitors and zoo Siberian tigers were negatively affected by zoo visitors but not in wallaroo study. Accordingly, negative affects must be changed into positive effects through education of zoo visitors and zoo keepers. Moreover, it is important to improve zoo facilities. To make confident conclusions about visitors' effects, more studies including detailed factors such as visitor number, visitor's behavior, and zoo facility are needed.
