Animals in captivity can display many problems that can be uncommon in the wild. Hair loss or poor quality is one of common problems seen in zoo animals. Hair status of an animal is important because it is an indicator of animal health condition and welfare. In this thesis, several cases of hair and skin problems in zoo animals, laboratory animals, or humans were reviewed. Cases of hair loss in capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrocharis) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) in Seoul zoo were highlighted. Four capybaras in Seoul zoo showed hair and weight loss, as well as general dermatitis. Seven additional vegetables, leafy greens and fruits that increased dietary vitamin C concentration from approximately from 300 to 400, to over 600 mg/kg (dry matter basis), were added to the diet. Within 6 months, capybaras’ hair coats, skin, and body condition were improved, with vitamin C considered a major factor for alleviation of the problem. Increased levels of other nutrients (i.e., vitamin B6) provided by the diet change may also have contributed to the improvements seen in the capybara. In a second case, squirrel monkeys in Seoul zoo showed seasonal hair loss every year. Approximately half of the individuals (13 of 25) showed light to severe hair loss in fall and winter seasons. Dietary and serum nutrient levels, and thyroid hormones of squirrel monkeys were analyzed. Iodine concentration in the diet (5.1 mg/kg) was higher than primate requirement and serum thyroid hormone levels (T3, from 0.5 to 0.9 ng/mL and T4, from 3.1 to 6.1 μg/dL) were lower compared with reference values for average human. Seasonal hair loss of squirrel monkeys in Seoul zoo appeared to be mainly due to combination of thyroid hormones disorder, seasonal climate change, and reproductive cycle. Change in diet formulation alleviated the issue.
