Since the researchers of Music Education of the 20th century, such as J. Dalcroze and C. Orff, emphasized the importance of movement or actions in rhythm education, a series of studies have been peformed on the rhythm education utilizing the instruction methods of these three researchers. However, face-to-face meeting of educator and learner were assumed in their pedagogical methods. Recently, a motion recognition device (e.g. Kinect) is flourishing a normal human life. It is being used in many application fields, including motion capture in 3D movies, real-world simulation, and computer games. Furthermore, it has been utilized in school, and brought a new sensation to education in the aspect that new teaching aid for educational methodology were given by it. If the motion recognition device which detects the movement of people can be utilized for teaching rhythmic pattern, naive learners will be more interested in learning rhythmic pattern by expressing and synchronizing their movement with musical rhythms. Therefore, it is natural to combine traditional well-established rhythm learning method with new information technologies, and more various and vivid rhythm learning program could be used as a result. The aim of the research is to design a computer based rhythm learning method, and implement the method using motion recognition technologies. For background studies, existing literature which includes rhythm learning mechanics based on movement, hierarchy of rhythm learning, Scratch programming language for our implementation, and Kinect which is used for our motion recognition device, have been reviewed. To maximize effective rhythm learning, the researchers designed step-by-step learning activities which are based on the hierarchy of rhythm learning by E. Gordon. Also, on the basis of this design, a storyboard which covers the learning activities to emphasize the amusement was constructed by the researchers. To evaluate the learning method of this study, a computer based rhythm learning software using Scratch programming language with Kinect as the motion recognition device was developed by the researchers. It is believed by the researchers that new teaching aids can be provided by their rhythm learning method based on motion recognition because it is based on well-established pedagogy for strong mental learning and new information technology for adding amusement and automation.
