Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of group music therapy based on song psychotherapy on depression, self-esteem, automatic thought, cognition, resilience, and quality of life of middle-aged women in Attendance at Lifelong Education Center.
Method: The subjects of this study were 627 middle-aged women in attendance at C middle and high school for adults and the process of academic bank credit system of lifelong education center. 30 middle aged women with above 10% of Center for epidemiologic studies depression scale(CES-D) score were selected after screening test of depression using CES-D. They were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group, 15 people respectively. The experimental group was subjected to 50 minutes of group music therapy based on song psychotherapy, for three times a week and up to 12 sessions. The control group was subjected to none. To find out the effects of the group music therapy, pre and post tests were conducted and compared using CES-D, Self-esteem scale, Negative automatic thought questionnaire(ATQ-N), Cognitive triad inventory(CTI), Korean version of the Coner-Davidson resilience scale(K-CD-RISC) and Korean version of WHO quality of life scale abbreviated.
Independent T-test was conducted to investigate the homogeneity between the experimental and the control group, and differences between groups, differences between measuring timings, and interactions between groups and measuring timings were measured by performing Repeated Measure two-way ANOVA to find out the effects of group music therapy based on song psychotherapy.
Result: The results of this research are as follows.
1. Depression of experimental group was significantly decreased compared to the control group after group music therapy.
2. Self-esteem of control group was significantly decreased compared to the control group after group music therapy.
3. Low self-esteem in ATQ-N of experimental group, was significantly decreased compared to the control group after group music therapy. But there were no significant changes in maladaptation, desire for change, negative self-concept, negative expectation, and helplessness of ATQ-N.
4. Cognitive triad and its sub-scales such as viewpoint on self, viewpoint on the world, and viewpoint on the future of experimental group were significantly increased compared to the control group after group music therapy.
5. Resilience and its sub-scales such as strength, patience, optimism, control, and spirituality of experimental group were significantly increased compare to the control group after group music therapy.
6. Quality of life and its sub-scales such as physical health, psychology, social relationship, and environment of experimental group were significantly increased compared to the control group after group music therapy. But there was no significant change in geneal health of WHOQOL-BREF.
Conclusion: Group music therapy decreased depression of middle-aged women, and had positive effects on self-esteem, automatic thought, cognition, resilience, and quality of life which can affect depression greatly. These results suggest that song psychotherapy-based group music therapy could be a program for middle-aged women with risk of depression in attendance at lifelong education center.
