Recently, the direction of research in the quest for better materials has shifted to the preparation of porous metals in the nanoscale range owing to their remarkable catalytic properties, which are superior to those of non-porous metals. Among the many different nanomaterials, porous Au nanoparticles (pAuNPs) are very attractive for various applications, mainly because of their unique optical, catalytic, and electrocatalytic properties. In the first chapter, we describe a simple one-pot approach for the synthesis of pAuNPs without any extra surfactant, seed, control, and so on and their nonenzymatic electrocatalytic activity toward the electrochemical oxidation of NADH. The shape and structure of the pAuNPs catalysts were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy to examine the morphology and to analyze the optical properties of the synthesized products. To investigate NADH detection, the pAuNPs were loaded on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode with Nafion as the capping agent for the nano-catalysts. The prepared GC/pAuNPs/Nafion electrode exhibited an improved performance at low overpotential in NADH detection.
In the second chapter, we report the facile synthesis and characterization of carbon-supported Ru layer-coated Pd nanochain networks (RuPdNNs/C). A series of RuPdNNs/C with various Ru/Pd weight percentage ratios were prepared by the spontaneous deposition of a Ru cluster on a PdNNs core using different Ru precursor concentrations. The compositional/structural features were characterized by SEM equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), HRTEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrocatalytic activity of the RuPdNNs/C for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media was measured by rotating disk electrode (RDE) polarization experiments. Indeed, the prepared Pd based nanocatalysts, especially the RuPdNNs/C decorated with a very low amount of Ru, exhibited significant electrocatalytic activity toward the ORR. This activity is critically dependent upon the Ru coverage on a Pd core surface.
Development of low-Pt content cathode electrocatalyst in fuel cell has been recognized recently as one of the most important issues due to its high cost and limited supply. In particular, some approach to minimize the Pt content of electrodes has focused on the formation of small nanoparticles. In the third chapter, we demonstrate a facile wet chemical strategy for preparing PdNNs and Pt decorated PdNNs (PtPdNNs). The PdNNs were synthesized by simply mixing PdCl2 aqueous solution and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) at pH = 7.0, followed by hydrazine hydrate reduction. For PtPdNNs, Pt was deposited spontaneously on the surface of the PdNNs. The prepared Pd based nanocatalysts, especially the PtPdNNs decorated with a very low amount of Pt, exhibited significant electrocatalytic activity and stability for the ORR. The activity of the catalysts for H2O2 electrochemical oxidation/reduction was also examined by RDE voltammetry and amperometric i-t curves. The results showed that the RuPdNNs (or PtPdNNs) electrode exhibits high sensitivity, a wide linear range, and a low detection limit for the detection of H2O2. Therefore, the PdNNs-based catalysts have promising applications as a nonenzymatic amperometric sensor.
