The 21st century is for cultural contents. Thanks to diverse cultural contents and image marketing for Korea having been developed, now we are exporting even our cultures beyond economic things, leading us an outstanding country among the world most advanced countries. As along with the K-Pop the Korean traditional dramas and movies are attracting more interests, aesthetic values such as our traditional life style, dressing, or hair styles are getting more importance.
The purposes of this research are to know the women's life styles by watching the women in the genre paintings of the later Josun era, categorize the types of Gache-Meori of the women in the later Josun who had serious weight on their hair dressing, know those formative forms, and develop diverse designs for Gache-Meori. And according to the results it intends to understand formative values of Gache-Meori and develop various designs.
The expression techniques of Gache-Meori in the later Josun includes Tre-Meori, Chignon-hair, Unjeon-Meori, Dule-Meori, Guimit-Meori, and Nangjassanggye.
Tre-Meori. First, part the original hairs on the front head and comb well, then make a chignon on the back of the head. Put a inside-Gache on the center of the parting line, and cross the Gache across the right and left, round around the head, and on the forehead make crossings. Highlighting point is the parietal center. Wind and cross the tied hair bunches on several points and fix them with inside-Binyeo. When the hair bunches are asymmetric to the one side and cover the parting line, the parting line is hidden and unseen. Expression by exposing or hiding the ears was associated with the social class. Chignon-hair is made by parting from the center line of the forehead, combing meticulously behind the both ears, braiding each of the hair bunch by three threads, and making a chignon and fixing it with Binyeo. Chignon-hair is symmetric. Its forehead line is clear and has angles. The highlighting point is on the back of the neck. It makes a chignon with loose three-thread braids or with the original hairs without braid. Ungeon-Meori is parted in two on the back, and then braided. Braided hair bunches are upward roundly and crossed each other at the front head and placed right there. Or, another way, tie whole bunch of hairs on the back and place it up on the front head, making appear the shape of the head. According to the class, the thickness of the braids were different, and whether to expose the ears or not was also different. How much mass of Gache to use was also different according to the class. They fabricated Gache with two bunches and three-thread braids and made different highlighting points for giving splendidness and catching the eyes. Place hair bunches on the front head, hiding the parting line and making an asymmetry style. Dule-Meori can be symmetric or asymmetric style, but was mostly symmetric style. On the back side, make thick bunches of braided hairs by putting Gache hairs little by little among the original hairs and tie them together on the back of the neck. Then part in two and wind up on to the front head and make a knot there. Then fix it with inner-Binyeo. Put the rest of the hairs into between the stacked hair bunches. This Gache is small and simple and exposes the ears. Guimit-Meori is parted along the center line and combed down meticulously. Then tie it on the back of the neck together, braid with three-thread, and then tie Dangi hanging on the end of the hair. It is symmetry shape, and the thickness of the braids, how to tie Daenggi, and exposing of the ears were all different according to the class. In Nangjassanggye, hairs are on the front head and combed back. On the back of the neck, make two chignons on the right and the left, exposing the ears. It is symmetry style and the highlighting point is the back of the neck.
Second, the characteristics of Gache-Meori in the genre paintings according to the classes like kisaeng, commoner women, and noble women are examined.
Tre-Meori of Kiseang has some thicker and larger hair bunches, so it has thick and clear lines. Give feeling of mass by crossing the hair bunches and placing it on the front head, and make it glamorous with the asymmetry shape on one side. Along with the center of the front head, several highlight points give glamorousness, and the principle of symmetry and asymmetry is used. Chignon-hair has right and clear forehead, hanging long over the Jeogori, and gives the balance with symmetric shape. Guimit-Meori is braided densely and hung down long to the back of the neck, giving neatness with symmetry and verticality. Nangjassanggye gives feeling of mass with two chignons on the back of the neck, and active expression by exposing the ears.
Commoner maried-women wore the smaller and flatly-wound Tre-Meori than Kisaeng. They gave variances with asymmetry style, and gave massing on the front head. Unjeon-Meori gives highlights on the front head and the top head by placing the hair bunch, makes variances with asymmetry, and gives massing to the front head. Dule-Meori is mostly symmetric shape, and give massing by winding on the front head. Chignon-hair gives a neat feeling by parting on the front head and combing back meticulously, and makes massing by fixing with Binyoe on the back of the neck. Guimit-Meori has symmetrically densely-crossed braids and gives vertical feeling with neatness and balance.
Tre-Meori of the noble class married-women gives variances with asymmetry, hides the parting line by placing the Gache on the front head, and gives elegant beauty by covering the ears. Unjeon-Meori is turned and placed on the front head, covers the ears, with being symmetric and decent. Guimit-Meori ties the hairs in one bunch on the back of the neck, having thick hair bunches, with the symmetric shape with a long braid to the waist line. Loosely braiding and covering ears, tie a Denggi at the end of the hair.
Third, Tre-Meori used much mass of Gache regardless of the class, and the wound hair bunches makes the curve beauty. And it is splendid and extremly beautiful with different highlighting points. Unjeon-Meori was favored too, regardless the class. Even with less mass and splendidness of the hair than Tre-Meori, it makes the style with stacking hairs high and big on the center of the top head. Chignon-hair lets us know the trends of different ages according to the position of the chignons. It is placed on the back head neatly and a traditional style that has handed down till today. Dule-Meori was used mostly by the commoner married-women. The hair bunch wound and placed on the front head looks some smaller but is convenient for daily activity, and contains a humble beauty. Guimit-Meori had different styles and know-hows according to the class and exposing of the ears. Nangjassanggye was used mostly by the authority-hired Kisaengs and the unmaried Kisaengs, with two chignons expresed with massing and in unique and original way.
