Music makes human beings to feel emotions such as happiness and sadness, changes their feelings and mood according to musical elements, and gives them motivations for actual actions and becomes the medium which alters the quality of life. When music, the fruit of human’s emotional expressions, is played, however, music as a medium may influence people’s feelings again through the effect of neurotransmitters like hormones. Among a series of developmental characteristics that they go through, teenagers, who are subjects of this study, are characterized by establishing their identities according to their rapid physical changes of body, cognitive development, emotional and social development, and planning their lives.
Therefore, this study closely examined a need of music therapy programs to heal the emotional turmoil in that particular stage of life such as wandering, trial and error, fear of failure, and to help them grow healthily. This study aims to find a way to improve therapeutic effects by utilizing music for adolescents experiencing psychological changes in the process of development to relax and control their emotions. In general, the therapeutic effect of music is significant in that clients have the effect of psychological relaxation and comfort, expression of condensed stress or energy in the unconscious part of the mind through musical activities.
Therefore, from the view that music therapy for adolescents definitely has its worth, we have applied S-curve theory, which is known to be effectual in developing and planning a music therapy program, when proposing a purpose of this study. And we intended to verify how effective the program is on treating adolescent’s emotional changes and stress by developing and proposing a program based on S-Curve theory and applying it to adolescents. If we are to propose the purpose of our study more specifically; first, we aimed to propose S-curve theory appropriate for the developmental stage of early adolescent; second, we implemented the program targeting junior high school students, who are classified as middle adolescents, in order to validate the effect of the program; third, we set to comprehend whether there is appropriate change in the theory through quality analysis to analyze emotional changes of adolescents according to different progression phases of the music therapy program and to inquire its effects in real life. 8 students of W junior high school were chosen to be the subject of this program. focus group situation was applied, and only a few number of subjects was chosen to participate, concluding that it would be more efficacious for a researcher to lead. This was because we judged that it would be appropriate for more thorough analysis of clients’ response to execute the qualitative research for contemplating effects of the music therapy program.
Thus, this program aimed to achieve its purpose through asking immediate questions and collecting reports from students during music therapy and feedbacks at the end of each stage of program, and in-depth interviews with the subjects.
The main content of this study is as following. In chapter 1, the problem presentation for necessity of this research, the purpose and the procedure of this study are depicted, and key words in this study are defined by preceding researches. In chapter 2, theoretical backgrounds of music therapy are dealt such as understanding of concept, relationship between adolescent and music therapy, and phased approach for teenager’s effective psychotherapy. In chapter 3, research plan and empirical research performance were subdivided and studied in order to study the influence to adolescent psychological therapy. In chapter 4, actual research was carried out on 8th grade students among teenagers, and results were analyzed. Here, teenager’s autodetaching and re-search, the concept of successfully catharsis and stages of integration, establishing goals and motivation, and acceptation of reality and application were studied.
