A study on relationships between sweet food consumption and stress status of college students in seoul and gyeonggi-do areas원문보기

Stress is related to food intake and food selection and stress can also negatively affect food habits. For college students, poor eating habits can cause problems on adult health. This study was conducted to identify the current status of health-related habits, sugar intake from sweet food, the degree of stress and the relationship between them in college students in Metropolitan area. The subjects were 760 college students(370 men, 390 women). The questionnaire were about health-related factors, monthly sugar intake from sweet food, changes in meal size and preferred taste under stress and perceived stress. The average age of the subjects was 22.4±2.0 years in men and 20.9±1.8 years in women, and the average BMI was 22.9±2.7 in men and 20.0±2.1 in women. The results for health-related factors showed that the average number of weekly exercise, smoking, and drinking alcohol was higher in men than in women(p<.001), and the subjective health status was more highly recognized as good in men compared to women(p<.001). monthly sweet food intake was higher in women than in men as shown in sweet cookies(p<.01), candy and chocolate(p<.001), bread(p<.01), milk and dairy products(p<.01), and coffee(p<.001), but male subjects showed higher beverage intake than women(p<.001). The stress score was 53.0±15.1 in women and 50.0±15.3 in men, showing higher stress in women(p<.001). For the causes of stress, women had more stress in job and study related problems compared to men, and men had more stress in personal relations and money related problems compared to women(p<.001). For changes in food intakes under stress, the intake was greatly increased in women than in men(p<.001). For food preference changes before and after stress, men preferred more hot and spicy foods and less salty foods after stress(p<.001), and women significantly preferred more sweet and spicy foods and less salty, sour, and bitter foods after stress(p<.001). Sugar intake by stress factors showed that factor 1(worries, fatigue and tension) had higher intake of confectionaries. Factor 3(anger and aggression) had higher intake of beverages. Sweet food intake after stress tended to increase by higher cookie intake both in men and women as stress increased, but the difference was not significant. From the above study, women showed significantly higher sweet food intake both in normal status and under stress, and also showed higher stress scores. Nutrition education on sugar intake from sweet food under stress has to be emphasized to prevent adult’s healthy problem among college student.
