Abstract
This study aims to undertake an in-depth investigation of the psychological phenomenon and its significance experienced by middle-aged pastors’ wives with high levels of marital adjustment. Participants of this study were 7 spouses of pastors. Both couples of all participants scored 109 or above on the Korean version of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale(DAS), developed by Spanier(1976) and translated by Lee Min-sik and Kim Jung-sul(1996). Two in-depth interviews were conducted to collect the data, which was analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. A total of 39 topics and 11 topic groups were identified through the analysis.
This study revealed that the central psychological phenomenon occurring in middle-aged pastors’ wives with high levels of marital adjustment was ‘the transition from the role of pastor’s wife and its inner conflict into discovering one’s identity as a spiritual partner.’ The analysis results are further presented as: the psychological phenomena experienced in marital adjustment, the factors influencing marital adjustment, and the spiritual meaning of marital adjustment of pastors’ wives.
First, the psychological phenomena experienced by pastors’ wives in marital adjustment were found to be the absence of well-balanced pastor couple models, the hardships of a pastor’s wife, disappointment in and conflict with the husband, and inadequate conflict coping methods. Prior to marriage, the participants had not actually thought of becoming pastors’ wives; they got married without any information or preparation about becoming pastors’ wives. They had an unbalanced view that both the pastor and the wife should always be sacrificial exemplars. It was also found that the participants suffered extreme interference and coercion of their mothers-in-law about the role of a pastor’s wife. The pastors’ wives were exhausted physically and emotionally from the heavy responsibilities of pastoral ministry and financial difficulties. They felt lonely because they had no one to share their feelings with. They also suffered from inner conflicts in the process of foregoing their personal wants. They became disappointed in their husbands who were not in agreement with their ideal image of a pastor, they experienced conflicts due to personality differences, and they were upset that their husbands were indifferent about their unreserved sacrifice. In terms of conflict coping methods, the participants either put up with the conflicts or tried to change their husbands in their own ways, but the husbands generally tried to avoid conflicts. The immaturity in communication methods between the spouses and the lack of understanding of one another’s conflict coping methods aggravated the conflict between the spouses.
Second, the factors influencing marital adjustment of pastors’ wives were: experience of healing and restoration through spiritual training and social resources, accommodation of one another’s weaknesses and limitations, continued efforts for change, and emotional support and trust of the husband. The participants were able to get better perspectives of their husbands and themselves through prayer and Word, and had the experience of accommodating one another’s weaknesses and limitations. Also, they felt comforted and encouraged through fellowship with other pastor couples of similar experiences. They experienced recovery of wounds and pain in their hearts through counseling, the Pastor’s Wife School program, seminars, and so on. They made cautious efforts of starting conversations and continued efforts for change in order to prevent prolonged conflicts. It was found that the pastors’ wives experienced emotional support and trust of their husbands when the husbands accommodated their weaknesses and limitations and rendered unreserved support and encouragement for studies and ministry.
Lastly, the spiritual meanings of marital adjustment experienced by the pastors’ wives were found to be respecting and sharing one another’s life, actively leading the life of a pastor’s wife, and taking the role of a spiritual partner. While respecting one another’s ministry and activities without excessive interference, they shared life by spending time together. As they spent more time in marriage, it was found that they became more like one another, had similar interests, and were engaging in conversations more frequently. After having the experience of getting their inner wounds healed, the participants were able to understand those who hurt them and were able to pray for them. They accepted as a fact that the life of a pastor’s wife is a difficult but special life. Having accepted the difficulties of pastoral ministry, they faithfully supported their husbands. After getting married, the purpose and vision of the pastors’ wives became God-centered and they experienced spiritual blessing through faith and obedience. It was found that they had complete respect for husbands for having adequate spiritual and self management. They were enjoying a happy and joyous marriage life, full of respect for one another.
This study is meaningful for providing an in-depth understanding of the psychological phenomena and essence in marital adjustment experienced by middle-aged pastors’ wives with high levels of marital adjustment. Such in-depth data is useful in reducing the unnecessary trial and error of pastors’ wives in their pastoral ministry and marriage and in providing effective help in marital adjustment. This study confirms that healthy marriage not only helps to establish strong role and identity of the pastor’s wife helping to engage in pastoral ministry with a positive mindset but healthy marriage also plays a vital role in helping to experience qualitative meaning and calling as well as inner maturity.
