Non-verbal animation tends to rely on body language, rather than oral language, in view of story development. Therefore, it naturally aims successful use of visual and audio material. The purpose of this study is to analyze the unique features and diagnose the current situation of slapstick comedy animation, as well as to suggest the blueprint for this. Both “Larva” and “Usavich,” first one made in South Korea, and the latter in Japan, are animations that have earned good reputation for outstanding slapstick action. By analyzing the unique features of the two animation works, we will hopefully gain a meaningful insight into the future of high-quality non-verbal slapstick comedy animations. So far we have discussed about the narrative structures, the characters, and the features for provoking laughter, along with the camera angles and background music used differently in each work. While both “Larva” and “Usavich” mainly focus on the conflicts between two main characters, each animation has distinctive structure of its own. First, “Larva” presents a number of possible conflicts not only between the main characters themselves but also between the main ones and a sidekick, or between the situation and the main characters, and so on. As a result, it is highly valued thanks to this variety in the conflict. On the other hand, “Usavich” rarely attempts to build conflict structures which are not based on the wrongful action and the followed payback between the two main characters. Nonetheless, what makes “Usavich” so special must be its realistic and detailed mise-en-scene, which obviously makes the humorous aspects beneath the basic conflict structure even clearer to the audience. However, these two animations do have certain things in common: both of them use twist as a way to deliver humor, not to mention the musical aspects such as dancing and singing, or playing the instruments which has its root in Vaudeville performance. Meanwhile, considering the camera movement, full shot is mainly used in “Larva” in order to cover the wide-range of slapstick action in a single scene, whereas various camera angles can be found in “Usavich,” focusing on a certain part of the action at a time. Lastly, we looked at the important role of background music in both “Larva” and “Usavich” to find out that music helps effectively deliver the characters’ emotion to the audience by causing sympathy with the dramatic situation. This study analyzed the narrative structure, the conflict structure, and the means of delivering humor of non-verbal slapstick comedy animation by comparing two main works in this genre, “Larva” and “Usavich.” As a matter of fact, it is inevitable to deeply look into this specific genre, due to the tendency, so-called “snack culture”, where short-paced contents are much more preferred and consumed more frequently than long-paced ones. Despite the fact, there has not been as many studies on non-verbal slapstick comedy animation as there should have been. Therefore it is greatly expected that more and more studies provide intense discussion about this genre for sake of cultural need. Hopefully, the ideas discussed in this study will be the basis for producing a good quality non-verbal slapstick comedy animation.
